Best (cheapest) place to buy a laptop adapter charger?

Ebay has the one I need for $39 + $10 postage

I know from experience that Ebay is not the cheapest place for new items but don't know where else to look and I don't know what I should be paying for it?

batterymall.com.au has it for $45.71 (+ postage I assume)

laptopplus.com.au has it for $55.00 + postage

Maybe ebay is the go?

Looks like genuine article from HP direct is $67.

The eBay item you've highlighted is $18 cheaper, but will not be genuine.

If it was me, I'd pay the extra $18.

Sage advice.

I bought a cheap knock-off USB cable for my walkman from a Hong-Kong-located retailer on eBay. Was about 10% the cost of buying a dinkum Sony cable. Unfortunately when it arrived I quickly discovered that it does not let the walkman charge while it is connected, and thus only provides 50% of the functionality of the dinkum item. Only cost me a few bucks, so it was a cheap way to learn a lesson.

Speaking to our IT guy at work he believes the problem is not the charger but the power socket in the laptop. He will check it for me tomorrow.

He says that if it's the socket then the cost of fixing it is not worth it given that you can get decent laptops for < $1000.

So, is what he says correct? Is the laptop stuffed if the socket is stuffed?

If you can get into it and change the socket yourself, or get a friend to do it cheaply, no. But if you have to pay the maker the rates they will slug you that is another issue.
I've changed sockets successfully in other electronic goods, but I've never tried to do it inside the tight confines of a laptop.
I did replace the cells inside a laptop battery successfully once though - nearly everything is repairable, it is just a question of economics.

I just remembered - some years ago I had a Targa laptop with a charging issue.
I checked the charger itself was delivering the current with a multimeter.
I hit on the strategy of wedging a tooth pick down the side of the plug when it was plugged in.
That skewed it just enough to maintain contact in the otherwise slightly sloppy socket.

Ah, that's good to know.

It turned out our IT guy here was talking about the cost of a whole new motherboard (ie, assuming socket couldn't be fixed) when he said it may not be worth fixing.

It's still all up in the air because the laptop is being looked at today to 100% diagnose the problem. Hopefully there's good news at the end of it.

I bought a new power jack from http://spares.bigwarehouse.com.au/ and am hopeful Dissident will fit it for me - if not I will head to a few other guys I know that would be technically capable. Only cost me $25 so far, am hopeful of labour only costing me a carton of beer!

Hi Diss, you're looking well today...

After all that we ended up where we started in that it was the charger that was faulty and not the power socket

Mine is a power jack and power adaptor issue, unfortunately for me.

New jack $25, new power adaptor $82. Pretty happy with that in the end of things, the laptop still has a lot of life left.
