Some discussion here in the Windows Vista topic ... viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16276&start=40

The bottom line it's not the 2nd coming ... if you are running XP or Vista and are happy, then stick wth it. If you have Vista and it runs like a dog then I would highly recommend the upgrade to Windows 7.

Remember at the end of the day it's just an operating system.

If you have Vista and are happy with it - you haven't found the power switch.

As for XP - well, it's 8 years old I think - and support will stop or has stopped.

No doubt at all.

Windows 7 is like Vista, with R&D.

I can't beleive how well it runs on older systems, too. It runs as good as XP on some systems I've seen that are over 4 years old.

I have it running on my netbook as well - excellent.

LOL Dutchy ... take Dissident's word for it but not mine. ;)

By the way, if you're a Uni graduate you should be able to join Alumni and obtain a Uni email address and utilise ItsNotCheating ... that's what I did to get 2 licences of Windows 7 Professional (full version, not upgrade) for $49.95 each by buying the 32-bt and 64-bit versions (licences are interchangeable between versions). http://www.itsnotcheating.com.au

Retail price is around $400 each for this.

If you don't believe me then ask Dissident to confirm ...

They're stated as upgrades but are actually the full version.

You can turn the download into a bootable iso and do a clean install without any previous version of Windows. There's a fait bit of discussion on Whirlpool about it.

Even though I have legal installed XP and Vista on my desktop and laptop, I did a clean install on both with the bootable install disk I created from the download ... ie. didn't have to install from the existing licenced versions.

so to update from Vista to 7 is there much involved? does it wipe everything on my hard drive or will it simply keep everyhing as is but a fresh OS?

You can elect to upgrade Vista to Windows 7, which will replace your Vista environment with Windows 7 and save Vista as windows.old. This will preserve all data and installed programs.

Or you can install Windows 7 as a clean install to a separate hard drive or partition, in which case your data and programs will not be migrated and you will have to reinstall the programs and copy the data over.

It's very easy to install but make sure you back everything up regardless of which method you use.

I've heard that it is not possible to upgrade directly from XP to 7. Is that correct?

Correct, you cannot upgrade an XP installation to Windows 7, but you can purchase an upgrade edition of Windows 7 and legally do a clean install.
