Anyone using Skype? A very cost effective communication method, I'm looking forward to ditching the land line eventually

Friend of a friend used this over the weekend to hook up to his mates in the UK to watch the England v Paraguay game. Apparently they could see the TV over in England, and there was no delay to what they were seeing on their TV here in Australia.

Don't know that much about computers, I noticed this thread and remembered that he used a program called Skype for a video link-up.

A couple of my mates use it, they said not to skimp on the handset you buy as you get what you pay for.
If you get an elcheapo you might have an "echoey" line which will sound like you're calling from inside of an aircraft hangar.
If you get a decent one it'll sound very close to what the phone sounds now.
If you make a few O/S calls or regularly call the country its definately the way to go.

It's also the way to go for local calls, if you talk for less than 5 minutes it's chaeper, most blokes could handle this. Probably not suitable for women or tennagers

I'd rather use a VoIP provider, maybe NodePhone or something similar.

I wouldn't trust something "Free" to handle my calls....

I've been using it for nearly 3 years now but only via a headset/mic and as an IM. Fantastic...really can't fault it.

As well as saving a fortune in phone call charges, I use it to send footy scores by SMS/text to people who can't get to games or listen to radio coverage...eg a Panther stuck in a meeting and a Redleg who had to go to his daughters wedding to name just two.

I'm planning on maybe getting a handset and a netbook for my Redlegs or bust road trip as I don't want to have to get a mobile phone that I'd only need for 2 or 3 weeks...but I'll check out all that wi-fi stuff and interrogate our resident geeks nearer the time.

JAS

Not sure if you know this but you can NOT use Skype to call the emergency services so think carefully before ditching your landline. See about 1/2 way down page on the right...

Bundy if you're uptodate with the latest version then I've found the Skype forum can be very good at troubleshooting...

Another link that some might find useful if they're suddenly having problems is this one that the techs use to tell you if there are any known problems...

Back on topic...

I use an ATA (Linksys SPA 3102) and a call provider (http://www.pennytel.com/au/index.jsp). Not entirely free, at 8c per call anywhere in Aust and 10c per minute to mobiles (something like that anyway) it's pretty close to free. It gives me the freedom to use the land line should the www be playing up and buys time until naked dsl is a better priced service. It also allows incoming calls to my existing land line number which is easier than telling everyone a new number.
