Assuming that you mean "action" games, i.e. adventure/strategy games don't count (and this immediately discounts classics like The Hobbit, Zork, Star Trek and Nethack)...

Arcade:
Gauntlet
Star Wars
Hyper Olympic
Battlezone
1942
Pengo

Computer:
Wizball (C64)
Dino Eggs (C64)
Impossible Mission (C64)
Ghosts & Goblins (C64) - better (easier!) than the arcade version
Robot Attack (TRS-80) - a clone of Berserk (arcade)
Arkanoid (C64) - didn't like the arcade version as much though
Microprose International Soccer (C64)
BoulderDash (C64)
Doom (PC)
Paradroid (C64)
Nebulus (C64)
Thrust (C64)
Clowns OUT. Smears OUT. RESIST THE OCCUPATION.

I'd forgotten about Zork...didn't play the early ones but had Zork:Grand Inquisitor on my first PC...what a hoot....Faceman from the A-Team and Shu'ari's dad from Stargate...'I am the boss of you'

If we can include PC games (not online ones) then I loved Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri too.

One of my favourite C64 games was Frankie Goes to Hollywood - really creepy game in which this shadowy figure goes from room to room investigating some kind of mystery by collecting weird, pervy clues and taking drugs. The only reference to the band was dodgy midi files of Two Tribes etc and some of their album iconography but it was a corker game - downloaded it again recently and it still holds up.

I like this review below - the writer has obviously never heard of Frankie the band!

Civilization (original)

Quake (Many many LANS with this growing up)

Diablo (original)
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.
