Check the above out first, then think about a dodgy power supply or, possibily but less likely, a faulty power switch.
Some clever virus programmes will nobble the common antivirus products - I had one that killed VET a few years ago.
You could try disabling or uninstalling AVG, then downloading another antivirus product like Comodo Internet Security.

In the last few days I've found Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes are unable to access Internet updates, but a malware sweep with a-squared has found nothing on my computer.
So, I'm wondering if their websites are under attack. I'll check again daily.

about to go home & pull the PC apart- gonna make sure the fan is working & it's not overheating. I hear something shutting down (fan?) & PC switches off randomly.

that could be it also Punky I have a laptop that did exactly that when it got a little hot. Problem sovlered by jacking it up on some empty CD cases gave it enough air to survive

i deleted AVG (which I paid for :? ) & replaced it with Avast!
I don't seem to be having anyproblems with my PC.... but I did also move & clean the Box-placed it on my desk where air flow will not be restricted (it was where I had it bfore, but only became an issue recently)

Punk

Are there two RAM sticks or just one?

If two - take one out and try it.
Then try it with the other one instead.
