If you have a wireless network you can connect and upgrade using that.
Otherwise you'll have to download it off the Sony website and put it on a Memory Stick, there should be instructions for that method online.
If noones posted a lin by the time I get home Ill do a search and see what I can find for you.

I actually downgraded the firm on mine so I could play backed up games on a Memory Stick. I dont think Sony encourage what I did though as some people might use it to play games they downloaded for free insteaf of buying them.
Its a fantastic little machine that does everything (web browsing is crap though thanks to the stupid keyboard layout), I'm suprised they're not more popular.

I believe mine is down graded aswell, because I managed to get the seller in China to provide me with CD's full of games in which I then put onto the memory stick and play from there.

But If i put the official SONY software on there then will i be unable to play these games?

Well in that case you might want to considering upgrading your firmware as other games might not work on it, I have version 3.70 m33 and it plays everything.
But if your firmware is less than 5.00 you can try, here's a link:

Is the NBA 09 you got the real UMD or on the memory card?

If its bought you have 2 solutions.
Either a) download it onto a memory stick and play it
or
b)upgrade the firmware through that link I gave you

Every game ever released on the PSP can be downloaded for free. But of course Id only recommened that if you purchased the original and want a backup on your memory card. ;)

If you upgrade with official Sony formware then no, if you upgrade with dodgy firmware through the link I gave you then yes (youd already have dodgy firmware, youre just upgrading that) but there is always risks when upgrading.
Simplest and safest way is to just download the game and put it on your stick.
I have two 8gb sticks, one for games and one for tv shows and movies and its more than enough. (I found some great software that converts divx movies to PSP format)

If you have concerns use google and read up on it.

I knew nothing about them when I got mine but can now do anything with it thanks to what I read online.

In regard to how do you upgrade, go to that link I gave you and instructions should be there.
