I am looking at getting one of these - probably a 30gb one. Does anyone have one and are they worth having? Should I be looking for a similar product from another manufacturer like an iRiver? Any tips would be great!!

Wont' start the debate again :)

I don't like iPods at all - I love my iRiver and do beleive they are superior. BUT iPods have good points - and to be honest, you wouldn't be disappointed at all with either.

Cheers for that Diss! I just found an earlier thread on the debate - iRiver vs iPod. Unfortunately it doesn't help me decide which would be the better option - may have to look into it more.

I always hated (and still do) people with iPods. Something about those poxy white headphones. Having said that I love my iPod....hmmm. Bit of a hypocrite eh? Basically I like it a lot but can completely understand why people wouldn't.

Has anyone with an iPod heard about Rockbox? It is a completely new operating system that is installed over the top of the Apple firmware. It gives you several features that the iPod under Apple doesn't support. Most importantly - gapless playback (previously a real bane of the iPod user) and a fully customisable graphic equalizer (the EQ presets with the iPod are shite).

I would really like these features but am a bit scared to install it, even though they promise it is reversible. I don;t think you can use iTunes with it afterwards which would turn me off as I like the way it synchs with my iPod. Anyone heard of it?

EDIT - actually Rockbox is not exclusive to the iPod. I think it can be used with all/most mp3 players.

Mp3 playes are old hat now, just get a decent phone with a decent mp3/media player player.
I picked up an Nokia N70 for $10pm for 2 years, has a 2mega pixel camera and an awesome sounding Mp3 player, can browse the net, play as many games as I want, views pdfs, can type word docs, excel docs, calcners, etc and watch movies and TV shows on it. Oh and you and can make calls with it too!
Having said that it was $25pm and probalby is again now as it was a short offer while most 3 stockists ran out of Nokia 6280s. Plenty of other phone while not as good can do a similar job for that price too.

Ive Got a sweet Motorola that run MP3 wickedly

Yeah Mrs Wedgie got one too and has that issue, they're known for it, just stoked I got the N70 for the same price on a 3 day only sale as its a much better phone, no battery issues as I may have got a Motorolo too.

i have an N70, good phone, but with a memory so large, it takes a while to load things and open messages etc. do you have trouble with ur ring tones etc? With mine, no matter what i set all the tones to, it mostly rings using that annoying nokia tune...grr... :x

Nup no probs with my ring tones, I"ve got it set up so I can watch TV shows/Movies I download using torrents on it, certainly helps kill a 45 min bus trip when I can catch up on a show from Yank Land which I struggle to find time to do.

PS Punky, the Walkman's are getting very poor reviews, there's a hell of a lot better phones out there.

Ahh ok, we were discussing phones and you said that you were looking at getting the Sony Walkman, no need to bang your head against the wall, Im sure you can see why I thought you were talking about the phone called the "Sony Walkman". :?

I can see now that you were referring to the initial post, my mistake, play on...

Well I ended up getting an iPod in the end, and so far it is great. I have been trying to put DVD's onto it, and so far have only managed to get 5 minutes of a DVD onto it due to the programs I used being trial versions which only allow you to encode 5 minutes of any DVD.

Does anyone know of a program I can download wich will let me do the whole DVD?
