Where should i purchase one, and what specs should I be looking for as a minimum?

Depends what you want it for mate, if you've got the cash look on Ebay for reputable sellers, some great bargains on there.
If you haven't got the cash goto the Good Guys, they have a great Toshiba for $1800 at the moment with great specs, I picked one up yesterday interest freee for 2 years.
(I got that one for gaming and media)

It makes a big difference on what you want it for, they come in a huge range of sizes and specs these days.

After a fair bit of looking at the market in 2007 I bought an ASUS F3SV.
The 1680 x 1050 display was my priority at the time.
I haven't looked at current models.
