Anyone used "Rock Band" on the PS2?

I just got back from Mallala, the missus' parents live up there. The youngest of the sisters got Rock Band (not RB2) for the PS2 and asked me to set it up.

Anyway, everything was assembled, but I couldn't get the damn guitar, nor the drums, to work.

The guitar has batteries, but I couldn't find anywhere on the drums for batteries. When you first turn on the game, the lights (XBOX lights) go on, on each device for a second and then off.

When you start a challenge, and you need to press X to join (green on both drums and guitar) it doesn't respond at all. I think the game beleive's there's no guitar or drums plugged in.

I tried for a good two hours, even using the dog-awful broadband up there to try and find some answers, but the slowness coupled with the laptop that was so slow I could smoke signal for help quicker meant my efforts fell short.

So has anyone tried this? Now i'm home I'll do some more reading. Either I did something wrong, or the damn things don't work!

She doesn't have a memory card but I'm sure that wouldn't affect what instruments you can use.
