was looking at getting both computers connected to same internet connection adsl2 with optus
can i use one via ethernet port and the other via usb to do this or do i have to buy new modem with router etc etc

It should work unless there is something about the modem configuration that makes it either/or only, in which case you may be able to alter the settings or you can get a cheap but effective switch [like a TP Link] to connect between the computers and the Modem.
