check around for a brand, get a model number and then search....
http://www.staticice.com.au for the best price nationally.
I look at choice magazine (online) for good and bad brands/models. Pretty easy to do some searching without leaving your office/desk these days.

G'day Johno37
We were after a new 42 inch plasma TV.And ended up with a new 50 inch plasma and cabinet(went back and bought a DVD recorder) delievered cheaper than the same model at another shop in a large shopping centre.
Do your homework .
See who has the best price
And go in Cash in hand and get a better price .but have the money on you .
And yes we bought the floor stock TV and cabinet and the last DVD recorder they had in the same brand .
Including the DVD recorder it was still cheaper than at the bigger shop .
But have cash in hand and haggle .I just stood next to the wife while she haggled .i told her after I felt like I was her hired goon just standing there, while she haggled .
cheers
And cash is king

yep, play the shops off aginst on-line competitors.
However, not all stores will buy into this debate, so keep looking until you find someone ready to play ball...
Also, beware the difference between "HD" & "Full HD".
Knowing this will help to know whether you're getting value or not.
(ie when quoting 1 price against another)
I did business with Truscott's (Adelaide), & was happy.

Our local one in Vic came good on a fridge and dishwasher, but I went in armed with the best prices I could get elsewhere and offered to pay cash. When we agreed on the price I said I could come back with the cash or give them a Visa card now and they took Visa. They threw in free delivery to pip the best price elsewhere, where the other place was going to charge to deliver.
It probably depends on the local manager. Our local Harvey Norman is never very competitive.

Lets just say that the price for a 42inch plasma on their website
they could not match .
Hence we went back to Betta the staff were very helping and interested in a Sale/Sales .And so they got our money, for a 50inch at around the same price of a 42inch .
Cheers
PS
I will warn you if you have a VCR they look crap played back on a Plasma (well ours did ).DVD recorder they look great.

Of course! that's because the TVs these days are such high quality - it makes average footage look even worse. Try playing an old tape on a brand new home theatre system, same result.
Average quality, on an average system.. means it sounds ok

We bought a SONIQ 32" for the lounge room earlier in the year from JB for $500. Corker of a TV for the price, you won't be too unhappy with your purchase I reckon.

My only comment is friends bought one and they regularly lose channels .

Can't comment on that part, we run the channels off the set top box which is a Phillips. The TV remote is only for switching the TV on and off.

My friends bought a plasma of that brand no set top box needed . And I think they lose channel 9 a fair bit .
JB put me off of a set top box calling me
CHEAP when I bought one for our old TV.Which would not work on our old TV but works perfectly on my lads TV.

Funny enough, the set top box (with DVD/HDD recorder) cost more than the TV!
