Music Download Programs

We've just bought a brand new Dell computer, and with it, bought the latest edition of Trend Micro. Our last computer crashed with viruses as a result of, I suspect, using Limewire on there and having our system flooded with Trojans.

We bought a music download program last night, called MP3 Rocket from memory. Trend Micro had just been updated before we downloaded anything. When we finished downloading (around 40 songs), we ran a scan and found a Trojan had come through the system. Immediately, we cleaned it off.

With all of this - is MP3 Rocket a reputable program, and if so, should Trend Micro have detected the Trojan immediately and halted the download? Does anyone else have any suggestions for something we may have forgotten to do at the time?

Cheers

Although I don't download music - "pop" is not my scene - I can comment in broad principal that all software that is used for downloading from popular sites is a target for viri, Trojans, Worms, and all forms of malware. The writers and distributors of these things target those popular sites and that type of software.

Ideally, don't use an MS operating system at all to access those sites, and if you must don't go to the sites with Internet Explorer as your browser. Do make sure you have a software Firewall like ZoneAlarm, use an antivirus programme that updates itself daily, automatically, like AVG, Comodo Antirus, Avira, and keep several spyware/adware programmes on board and update and run them alternately at least weekly - Spybot, EMCO Malware Destroyer, AdAware 8, AVG AntiSpyware.

All these are free - use them. If you keep cleaning your computer you don't need to replace it.

Often antivirus products supplied with computers are old versions that need updating before you start, and may not be the best even if they are a "name" product - that is just as for computers - a "name" just means they advertise a lot.

I think you may be wrong in blaming Limewire for the demise of your old computer. I've been using it for years without a problem.

Same, I'd be more inclined to blame your Anti-Virus software.

There's some threads on here mate discussing the whole Bit-Torrent thing, which is a good way of downloading albums at a time.

I'm not sure how much Little River Band stuff you're gonna find out there mate

Limewire is atrocious, I constantly berate both of my parents for using it as Im always cleaning or fixing their computer from virus's they've picked up on Limewire.
Ive used bit torrent technology for all my music, movie, programs, games for years and its the only way to go, never got a virus, its quick and unlike limewire you always get what its labelled as.
On behalf of all relatives that clean or fix computers, PLEASE DONT USE LIMEWIRE!
It doesn't how good your anti virus is, the best one in the world still wont stop all the virus's that Limewire has.

Well, I'm buggered if I know. I appreciate that you're not keen on Limewire, but as I stated I've never had any problems with it.
What do you suggest as a good (free) alternative? At the time I took on Limewire there didn't seem to be much on offer in the free department.

As I said in my last post, use bit torrent technology, its the only way to go.

I've used alot of anti-virus programs over times in the industry and although I suspect its not Limewire causing the viruses I must say that Trend would definitely be the worse anti-virus I've used by far..............especially if you use Trend on networks, it's SH*THOUSE!!!

Yes, Trend, Norton, and McAfee, have all lost ground in recent years. I used to use VET until it let me down some time after CA took it over.
In recent years Kapersky has been the highest rated commercial option among the IT set I mix with.

I'm using the free Comodo Antivirus at the moment, and it picked up some minor things AVG had missed.

Limewire is fine

It's the files you download off it which hurt you

Easiest program to download is vuze and then do torrent seaches for your music and movies (as simple as typing artist name or movie name into search engine followed by the word torrent, eg nirvana torrent and it will start downloading automatically through vuze). Tip is to read down and check the ratings, some movies have terrible quality picture or sound so simply pick another one to download. I like most piratebay torrents usually.

Otherwise as an alternative to limewire is frostwire.
