I've played with Linux in various forms for about 5 years, and in the end had to go back to Microsoft for practical purposes.
However, as APC magazine reported in the July edition, with Ubuntu 8.10 [Hardy Heron] it appears that the Ubuntu distribution, at least, has reached the point where it really can replace Windows. With WINE it appears to be able to run many Windows programmes, and can now read and write to Windows FAT and NTFS partitions. APC say it can now do almost everything Vista does, but better.
I am about to set up that version as a dual boot on my wife's machine, and play around witha dual boot of the KDE 4 beta on mine.
My machine does not hold anything critical like photos etc. and is the one used for experimental and slightly riskier stuff.
