At this very minute I am trying to shrink a huge TV capture (MPG, 7gb) of the Sturt v South game into something much more manageable. WinAvi used to work for me but it just seems to hang with such a big file. Would be keen to hear of any other software recommendations.

I think I've asked it about 4 times now! Not too bright
You're right though - I dug up that last thread at http://www.safooty.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8402 and will revisit a few ideas there. Since I changed computers WinAVI doesn't work like it used to for some reason :(

Oh, and it's MPEG-2s I want to shrink, not MPG. There still doesn't seem to be an easy, fool proof way just to shrink (reencode) an MPEG-2. I don't want to burn a DVD, just shrink a file. Rejig apparently does it in a very confusing way...

Have you tried WinAVI Video Converter 9.0 from http://www.winavi.com/

that will convert MPEG 2 to DVD
