Just got a PS3 the other day, but very disappointed about not being able to play pS2 games on it.
Had planned to trade my PS2 in for a bit of extra cash.
Does anyone know if there is a patch on the internet that allows you to play PS2 games on it?

Yeah the Australian version sucks.
Versions in some other countries are backward compatible though.

I'm pretty sure the original version sold here was PS2 compatible, albeit not 100% (done via software emulation).
When the 40 GB version arrived, they dropped the emulation and 1 or 2 USB ports as well.

I think you can download an emulator to play PS2 games.

I haven't downloaded it before but my mate did, I e-mailed him and he said you just have to get online on your PS3 and go to the PS3 Store. Hopefully that will help.
