in the past 5 days my laptop is freezing every 10 mins or so and losing my broadband connection..
it is giving the shites.. i have ran my nortons no viruses have been found .. done a defrag....
is it time to smash the thing

Try an anti-spyware programme or two - SpyBot, AdAware2007, AVG, - all free downloads, and perhaps try a different antivirus programme. None of them are perfect and Norton is no longer highly regarded. Trying another anti-virus involves uninstalling Norton and installing another option, as they otherwise tend to clash. Kapersky is well regarded still, and a short-term trial coul be downloaded free last time I looked. I am trialling the Comodo Antivirus beta at present, and am reasonably pleased with it, having gone from AVG to Avira to it over the last few weeks on the machine on which I experiment.
None of them are any use if not very frequently updated - like daily!
