optus internet

Postby Footy Chick » Wed Jan 30, 2008 10:04 am

Well I'm finally thinking of entering the 21st century and getting the internet at home on the computer I hate so much. :?

Optus can give me wireless broadband for $39.95 per month for 5gb and free modem. Im going wireless because I don't have a home phone and can't warrant paying for a home line i'll never use..

Is 5gb enough? all i will do is banking, access this site and play a few games. I'm not interested in downloading music or movies or anything like that...

is optus good for internet? Any thoughts?

I'm with Internode & also get 5gb for $39.95 per month, although I had to pay for my modem so you've got a pretty good deal.
5gb is plenty for you if you're not going to be doing any downloading of movies.

It is Wireless as in WIRELESS isn't it ?

I mean, some people say they give you a wireless router, that plugs in to your phone line - so you have WIRED internet but you can use it anywhere in your house, ie wireless

Yes it is. Just had to make sure.

It's like saying you have a "wireless" phone...

Could be -

- A mobile phone, you can take anywhere (no wires)
- A cordless phone, you can take anywhere in your house (no wires)

Both times it's wireless but both are different!

Just wanted to make sure you know what you're getting :)

Umm internodes wireless isn't "wireless"

http://www.internode.on.net/residential ... eless_dsl/

You need to install an antenna and radio equipment to get it. Kinda like satellite internet. It is not wireless internet which runs on the 3G or digital phone networks.

Optus' wireless is "wireless". It runs in areas with 3G and HSDPA area's only. You may need to check whether your home is in one of these areas.

The $39.95 is a bundle package however. Combined with an eligible mobile or home phone. $ 49.95 per month as standalone. Excess usage is charged at $ 0.15 cents per megabyte over the 5gb. So be careful.

Hope this helps.

in regards to the 5gb question I currently pay the exact same amount for the same price from a provider I'd rather not name here. My contract expires in April and I have only exceeded my download limit once. I use it for similiar purposes as you with the expception of the music (use it occasionally) and my study releated purposes (which anit much    )

Yes, that helped alot, my mobile is with Optus hence the cheaper price. As I said, all I will use it for is banking, being on here and playing games probably. I've been told since that I could watch youtube all month for that amount of download though, so it shouldn't be a problem..

Hmmm I wouldnt watch youtube for that long... lol

Easy way to work it out... the first week you get it. Use it as much as you like and then check the usage (they should have a data meter). If you have used less than 1gb in a week you are laughing.

I think heater means Vodafone, they do the same deal as optus it seems... but seeing as FC is already with optus it makes sense to stick with them I guess. Combine the bills :)

Also when you need a phone update you can push them into a better deal because you have your internet with them too :)

5gb will be plenty for you FC, I have 20gb and Im downloading stuff galore. Mind you I used to go through 40gb pretty quickly but the writers strike means there's less stuff to download!
I'd always recommend Internode or Adam though, sometimes worth the bit extra.
Only would consider going another provider if you're wrapping up several services together.

Apart from emails I only download some computer utility programmes, updates for programmes I use, or the odd Linux distro. I have never downloaded music or a movie. In the winter following the footy on the Internet increases my usage a bit.

Optus net is good. Im with optus and I find it to be ok. 5gb is alot for what you intend to use it for, so you should be right.
