HD v Full HD

Can anyone pls explain the difference?

Ie- with HD, do I have to buy a set-top box, & Full HD you don't?

Im no expert but having just bought a Full HD LCD (refer thread down the page) it is all about the resolution...FUll HD is 1920 x 1080 (which I believe is the number of pixels?) while the next one down is 1368 x 768 (not Full HD)

So you can get HD TV on either but depends what level you want, get someone at a store to show you and you will see the difference....I dare say Full HD will be the norm for all TV's shortly

You can only get HD via a digital television or set top box, 95% of TV's these days come with the box in built...

Given the unit I'm looking at is 50" (Panasonic TH-50PX70 (1366 x 768)) & I can get it from http://www.webprice.com.au for $2195, would I be better off looking at a 42" Full HD, at a comparable price?

do you have a big room? I set up my 42 inch in our old house with a lounge room of 3m x 4m and it looked rediculously huge and out of place but in our new house its in a large room and looks just right...

I'd be 4m x 4m x 14ft at the moment- I say this because I'm renting, & that can change in the future.

50 inch would be huge in that room!

suggest looking at both options in a shop and measure it out in your TV room...remembering for a 50 inch you will have to sit further back to get the best effect (not sure fo the ideal distance but a the shop will be able to tell you)

For that sort of money Punky, you should look at full HD.
Dutchy's explained it right.
Also depends what you're going to use it for in the future, at the moment if you're just going to watch TV there's no difference as I don't think things are broadcast in full HD.
But if you want to have a Blu Ray or HDVD connected in the future you'll only get the full clarity with full HD.
Also, 50 inchers aren't value like the slightly smaller one, you're paying a lot more for not much result.
Something around the 42 inch is the way to go, if you're dead keen on 50 inches or bigger give it a couple of years.

Just imagine Sharapova's legs on a 60incher.
They're long enough on my 42".

Nah, I moved to West Hindmarsh last May.

I'm seriously looking at 42"FullHD now.

I'd rather quality ofver quantity (methinks).
I think I wouldn't notice the difference in size as compared to the difference in quality- I want the option of getting a Blu-ray DVD player & not being compromised.

TV life between 50" HD (60,000 hrs) vs 42" Full HD (100,000 hrs) is a no-brainer also...

I narrowed it down to Sony Bravia 40" Full HD (LCD) v Panasonic Viera 42" Full HD (Plasma).

Get a free PS3 with the Bravia, however, was able to watch both units at once at Retrovision, & noticed where a colour shaded to black, it had a purple tinge on the LCD, & notmal colour on the Plasma- this has me leaning towards the Plasma.
Am looking at a package where I can get that & my home theater for $3500 (they retail at $2800 & $1300 respectively), & I heard talk about including a blueray DVD player....!

Sorry mate, I thought the Panasonic TH-42PX70A 42" (106cm) Plasma HDTV was full HD as when I had a glance at the specs it stated it has a chip that handles 1080 (ie blue ray) but that unit does appear to be different to full HD even though it handles full HD. Im no expert.
