PC is starting to get pretty full of photos, videos etc etc, what do people recommend to store stuff like this? Do you burn to disc still? Im thinking an external hard drive might be the go as Im going to have 2 laptops shortly...be interested in peoples views....cheers

External hard drives are very handy as you can move it, obviously, from one pc to another. I think mine is 250gb and was a little over $100 at the time. They are getting bigger and cheaper all the time - keep an eye on zazz.com.au, they often have them on there (it's where I bought mine).

Speak to Dissident.... he hooked me up with mine (320gb). Works a treat!

I have a 320g external hard drive, its good, but its damn slow to use.

Thanks Lads, confirmed my thoughts, and yes I look at zazz daily, unfortuantely I always remember at night and miss the good stuff!

What's a respectable price to pay for a 320 g External hard drive ?

I bought one just after christmas, there was a 320gb Maxtor for $129 and a 320gb Western Digital for $139. I rang up a mate who knows more about IT stuff than me and he talked me into paying the extra $10 for the WD as its more reliable and comes with a longer warranty.
Ive since used it to backup my harddrive and various discs and its great and quick, no probs.

I saw the same unit at an even better price, $129 from Officeworks includes a case if you want to take it for a walk, I bought it from Officeworks for $139 without the case and I thought that was a bargain.

Thanks Wedgie. Now a stupid question. For a non IT head like myself 320gb would hold roughly how many CD's ?

Yeah, absolutely heaps.
As a guide a DVD holds 4.7gb and a CD holds .7gb.

The machine we use for important information like photos and saved personal documents has a pair of 200GB HDDs as RAID1 and a 250GB back up HDD in the case. Thus 3 copies of everything - the only thing this doesn't cover is someone stealing the machine... Perhaps I should also have an external HDD I can lock in a filing cabinet when we are not home.

I agree Maxtor drives are considered a little iffy in the industry lately, but that changes with time. WD went through a bad patch with production a few years ago, and further back again Seagate had a bad couple of years. Currently we are using Samsung HDDs - fairly quiet and so far reliable - three year warranty and relatively inexpensive. Seagate are lately highly regarded and offer a 5 year warranty, but are about 20% dearer.

What was the model of the WD one Wedgie ? If it's the one I think Officeworks & A-R have them for $149. Officeworks also have the 500gb for $199. Might snarf one of the 500gb one's !
