And you all thought Dogger had no idea....

I've never had a computer at home, mainly because I didnt feel the need for one as i sit in front of a computer all day, however, for some bizarre reason on Saturday I found myself at Harvey Norman making the purchase.

Dont ask me what type of computer it is, all I know it has an LG moniter and it says Acer on the disk drive thingy.

The Harvey Norman man assured me it had word, excel etc.. as all I wanted it for was mainly for keeping footy records etc...

Get it home and set it up, managed to get a pic of the Big penguin for the wallpaper and I've managed to successfully install and play Zoo Tycoon. But that's about it..

Didnt come with much in the way of destruction manuals, and came with 2 cd's ,one to install the Monitor and one to install the printer. The moniter one had scratches on it and wouldnt load, and the printer one half installed and then decided it didn't want to respond, tried shutting the computer down and it wouldnt do that either, so I had to switch off at the power point. Not only that but all I can find in the way of programmes is a 60 office trial...

at this point I'm ready to throw the fargen thing out the window... have sent an SOS to Diss but his Pro Poker tour commitments means he can't get out to me for a while....

Now Im going to go away and cry... :(

Any suggestions for a dummy, besides taking it back?? :?

Hmmm.. that's an interesting one, thought of heading back to Harvey Normans and asking them with a WTF? lol

What type of Windows are you running.. as in Vista.. Xp etc.. Don't understand why it wouldn't shut down, that's a bit odd.

Considering Harvey Norman sold you it, and it's already as soon as you've got it doing this.. im sure they've got some sort of responsibility to you still.

It comes with Vista Home Basic or something like that. I tried opening some of the stuff from my USB. I can open pics ok, but any letters and stuff, I get the page up, but cant do anything with them, it says not responding (again!) It asks me for a confirmation number.. WTF is that and where do I find it??

Okaaaaaay.. sounds quite farrrrrrked.

Is it a new computer you've purchased, no way any of this should be happening with a new computer. Especially the scratched cd's.

It's hard to know what the problem would be over the net, but from the amount of problems you've said the computer sounds pretty faulty. Should probably give Harvey Norman a call... and if that doesn't help.. a boot up the..

Just called Harvey Norman and told some sales guy my dilemma, the guy that sold it to me wasn't there, he tried to defend his guy saying that he's well trained and would have told me it was only a trial (what are you calling me mate, an effing liar?) He said that he could get me word etc.. installed for $299 and couldnt go any lower than that....

Bullshit I said... I was told it was in there so I want it in there for nothing! Apparantly they dont have guys that come out, which means that i would have to pack up my computer and send it in for all the other stuff, I told him that if I have to do that, I'll leave the bloody thing there.

This is the reason I never wanted a computer at home... ](*,) :(

Thats **** crap.. i'd pursue it, you clearly would have been listening to the fact of whether it was a trial version or not considering that's the main damn reason you bought it! I had it when stuff like this happens, you'd think they'd explain things better considering a lot of their customers wouldn't have much computer knowledge.

And don't forget to point out to the manager that if you are not satisfied the next call is to ACCC.
The other option is that they take it back as "Not fit for Purpose." and give you a full refund.
If you keep it you are entitled to undamaged CDs with it too.

Don't buy Office our use a pirate version, download the free Open Office from
http://www.openoffice.org/

Reset its defaults to save as MS Office .doc files for compatability with other people's office products.

The only thing I can suggest to anyone.

Never buy a computer from a department store.

Always buy from a builder.

His business relies on his backup..!

His name is his business....

And yes, FC, I have no idea..!

If it has Vista you shouldn't need to install anything for a printer or monitor.

Worse comes to worse and you do and the discs are stuffed you can find the drivers online easy enough or let us know what the make and type it is and we could find them.

My last 2 PCs have come from Harvey Norman and have been fantastic, haven't missed a beat, you should have let me know as I get mates rates down at Noarlunga Harvey Norman.

FC's PC Update: Went home last night and Boris (the computer) was a lot more co-operative than the night before. Managed to successfully install Printer and monitor (even with scratched disc).

Called the guy at Harvey Norman today and he rekons his guy didnt recollect NOT telling me. In the end he's offered me a copy of Office Compare. I took it (out of principle) Does anyone know if this "Compare" is any good??

Lists all of the Office packages. I can't see Compare as one of them.

Yes it is.

You were talking Microsoft Office, he offered Office Compare - sounds like misleading/deceptive conduct to me.

If you want to push it (i.e. if you can be bothered) you will get your copy of Microsoft Office as they have offered an inferior product to try and get out of this cheap - this means they are acknowledging some fault in the matter.
