Bought and installed PlayTV this morning. Easy install and setup. Cleaned the PS3 hard drive up, so plenty of room to record.

p.s. Got it setup just in time to see that show pony Watson get out for a duck in glorious HD. Nice.

Nice deal in today's JB catelogue. 250gb PS3, Assassins Creed, HDMI cable and the Play TV for $599. Seriously considering it.

Went to Target Sefton Park, sold out already @ $139!
Got a raincheck, then went to EBGames they had 1 left and price matched.

Works great, except it found ABC channels but none of them work. Why would 1 set of channels not work, are they a way different frequency or something? Is it worth rescanning?

That's a sweet deal.

Gonna need at least 250G with a playTV, I'm day one and already have a dozen programs set to record from it's EPG.

I know you can swap in a 500g laptop drive, maybe a 640g, are there any larger laptop ones that are still thin enough to fit?

I've never considered getting one of these but this thread has got me thinking about it as a PVR alternative.
Currently I have a PC / media centre which is getting a bit creaky but through it I am able to:
- browse www on TV incl. ABC iView
- watch / record HDTV
- watch DVDs
- stream files wirelessly over network
- transfer files easily between inbuilt HD and external USB drive
- watch all kinds of video files from external USB drive
- play games

From those with PS3 experience, is it pretty much capable of doing all the above?
How well does it compare to a dedicated PVR or are there some drawbacks?
Is it easy to upgrade the HD?
Can you hypothetically chip / tweak it to play hypothetically naughty games?

Cheers for any advice :)

can do most of the above, but cant export to external device if over 4 gig, its easy to upgrade the HD, I did it and only took 5 mins, not sure if PS3's can be chipped

Getting closer...

Soon enough the PS3 will be chippable (new word?), then it will be worth buying.

I would stay away from chipping my PS3...apparently the chipped Xboxs "red ring" as soon as they go online...and pretty much turns the console into a plastic brick.

yes. i definetly wouldnt be volunteering my console to be te first one chipped! a bit sketchy if SONY can do the same to my ps3 as what has happened to chipped xbox 360's. as HH3 said, they are useless after they have done it, and have not heard of anyone being able to "reverse" the "bricking", not even if you get it "un-chipped".

Cant see how that would be the case, it just works like any digital set top box, so if you cant get it now I cant see how PLayTV will get it.

For those that have PlayTV there is a software update jsut released that gets rid of some of the bugs. Make sure you update
