Now if only Microsoft wouldn't price gouge so much ...

Which is a legitimate excuse not to upgrade IMO.
Anyone happy with XP or Vista shouldn't bother.

Yes, I'd agree ... if you're happy with XP or Vista then keep what you have (although I'd be amazed if anyone is happy with Vista!)

In my case, I have a Dell Inpiron 1720 laptop which ran like an absolute dog since the day I purchased it with Vista pre-installed, but since I dual-booted with Windows 7 RC two months ago not only have I had no issues, it's much faster and responsive. I also did the same with the family desktop PC which was running XP (although it had no issues prior to installing Windows 7 RC), which again now is more responsive. So for me it's a no brainer to upgrade, which I need to do by 1st March when the RC version I'm using time bombs.

The only trick now is to find a cheaper version of Windows 7 than the $180 retail price for the Home Premium Upgrade, which means OEM, TechNet or MSDN, or if a Uni student is in a generous mood, ItsNotCheating. ;)

I presume you have to buy it to upgrade from Vista?

Yep, around $180 for an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, which is sufficient for most home users, or much more for Professional or Ultimate.

Strictly speaking, yes ... but I would be very surprised if you couldn't activate more than one PC with the single licence.

All you need is a .edu email address which you can get here I believe.
http://******************

Correct, you need a valid .edu email address to be eligible for ItsNotCheating http://www.itsnotcheating.com.au which entitles you to a single licence of MS Office 2007 Ultimate for $75 and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $49.95

FWIW, not your fault, but I believe the link you have supplied to create and .edu email address is a bit suss ;)

If you are sure of that I will delete it. I used Itsnotcheating with a legitimate .edu address to get the upgrade and came across the link in another forum. In the public interest,I will throw myself on the grenade and sign up using the link I posted, try it on INC and report back :)

Cheers, that is very noble of you!

You'll see what I mean when you try to sign up. ;)

Another possible way to get an .edu email address if one is not a current student or staffer is through university Alumni.

I think it's a bit more than just signing up - From what I've read you've got to supply a lot more info about yourself which they threaten to verify, not sure if they actually would. I've got a school .edu email addy but they're only taking them from selected Unis and TAFE. Would appreciate a PM if anyone knows anything else :)

I may have been having a "boy look", but I couldn't see on the site what the Windows & upgrade upgraded from - e.g. from XP Pro or only from Vista.
I do have an edu address from one of the approved Universities.

Windows 7 will 'upgrade' from any licenced version of XP or Vista ... but if you have Vista Ultimate then you will be able to perform a clean install of Windows 7 only and not be able to upgrade the Vista environment you have. In all cases you can perform a clean install of Windows 7 with the upgrade licence.

You must launch the Windows 7 upgrade from within an existing licenced version of XP or Vista.

I would respectively disagree as IMHO it is a very good release!

As I have stated before, I've used the product for 2 months and it is a massive improvement on Vista and to a lesser extent on XP but if you see no need to upgrade then by all means don't.

Does that mean you work for them Deja? cos IIRC it's only been available to us mortals for about a week ;)

I'll be sticking with XP for now and let the rest of the world do the giant beta test on it first. Especially after the way my ISP techies and our local, extremely good, comupter shop (not high street chain) all told me not to go near Vista months after the release mainly due to the lack of compatability.

LOL, not at all! I'm in IT but do not work for Microsoft.

Everyone was able to freely download Windows 7 RC (release candidate) until mid August and run it until 1 March 2010.

Cheers ...
