Footy and sport in general looks great on it. The older LCD's were no good for fast motion but the newer ones are fine.

Probably stating the obvious here but make sure what they show you on screen is a real tv feed and not a dvd recording...can be a huge difference in picture quality. I've found most shops here will only show you live tv if pushed.

i watched that on ACA tonight

basically if you love sport and movies then PLASMA is the one for you

or you can go rear projection and the globes cost around $500 and will need to be replaced after about 2 years

Or, as I am doing, you can sitick with your old CRT till the new technology matures.

Yeah that's what Im doing, the 68cm CRT does the job for the kids and the missus and I only watch TV occasionally, spend more time on the computer where I have a media PC setup (that's probably obvious with the amount of posts Ive made on here).
When the 68cm blows up I'll get what's best then but my plan is to get a LCD with built in HD tuner somewhere over the 100cm mark.
Not having either a plasma or a LCD I have no 'bias' but if the LCD is affordable think there's no choice.
There's some bloody cheap plasmas though so if you're looking more after a budget than what's best it could be the way to go.

While we are waiting for Wedgie's feedback, I've looked several times and I keep changing my mind.

It seems they keep leap-frogging each other like Intel and AMD. My overall impression has been that the clarity and detail has been better with LCDs, but last time I was looking the sales pitch was that the new Plasma's have higher contrast and faster refresh rates than LCDs, whereas until recently they were slower refreshing. It left me not quite knowing what was true and what was bulldust.

Generally, my impression has been that the pixels themselves are larger on Plasmas, and so you need to be further away for it to appear as sharp. Conventional wisdom has been that Plasmas run hottter and this may shorten component life.

I still have the CRT I bought in 1997, the one from 1986 has stopped working, but I think it is only that the On/Off switch has cooked itself.

Yes, without a doubt when it comes to HDTV.

But don't take my word for it, take a DVD of sport and a DVD with a movie on them, shop around or give me a PM and I can help you out if you're paying cash especially and suss them out for yourself.
Sit down close to one for a movie, sit down close to one for sport.
Sit further away for a movie, sit further away for sport.
Work out where you're most likely going to be viewing it in your house.
Make up your mind and talk to the salesman a bit more.
Then compare the prices and make your own mind up.
That's the best advice IMHO.
It also depends on what sort you get, some of the LCDs Ive seen almost give you a 3d feel. My best mate has a huge plasma and every time Im at his place to watch footy I leave his pool room where he's got a bit screen plasma to watch his rear projection in the loungeroom which looks better!

Yes it is a tricky decision. I'll wait to see how OLED develops I think. [Organic Light Emitting Diode.]

I don't sit in darkened rooms, as I am usually doing other things like eating or serving wine or even [gasp!] reading or writing while I watch TV. It is probably just as well I still use the much faster refreshing CRTs! My 20 year old CRT just died, but may be fixable, the 10 year old one is fine and I bought one last year for the wife's sewing room because it was $300 not $3000. I still have a couple of 19" CRT computer monitors, and I am only using an LCD monitor instead to preserve desk space. I have a 30 year old valve pre-amp and power amp running my HiFi.

New technology is more about sales and profitability than about being better - recent computer models disappear fast because 10% margin on $3000 is better than 20% on $600.

Dutchy,if you can find a store with a Pioneer 507xda in stock I strongly suggest you go and have a look. While not full HD (507 is 1365x768,next model 508 will be full HD) the picture is breathtaking.
RRP was originally $6500 but as they are making way for the 508,if you can find one,you will get a good price. I paid $3800 from JB Modbury who are now sold out but I have heard anecdotally that some Harvey Norman or Truscott stores may still have some.Myers had them but they wouldn't do one for less than $4500 (Tea Tree Plaza).
What you get for your money----

50 inch plasma with inbuilt HD tuner
5 year factory warranty
Professional install, wallmount or stand.(Cables concealed in wall cavity extra $99)

Full specs here

Edit-- 42 inch also available if you prefer, don't know how much http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/5187 ... ew1jx0.jpg

Dutchy,

Really, you won't be disappointed either way. Personally, I bought a 106cm Panasonic Plasma around this time last year. I use it all the time and love it. It's only a Standard Definition TV but really, all I watch is SD anyway. Most Foxtel is SD, my DivX TV episodes I download are SD - heck, DVD quality is SD.

You can send yourself mental looking at TV after TV in the shop. Your mind starts to play tricks on you.

LCD have been bad in the past, and so have Plasma. But really, now, both are great and have great points.
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

you idiot!

thanks all for the suggestions...went and had another look today and gee the LCD Full 1080HD are real impressive, but double the cost of a plasma....Im going to go and have a look this Sat arvo when the footy is on and try to make a final decision

one side of me loves the LCD but worried about watching sport on it, but they are good in well lit rooms

the other side loves that the Plasma is cheaper and if technology changes dramatically I wont be that much out of pocket if I change it over, however not do good in well lit rooms

Kahuna - thanks for the info, even for our huge room I reckon the 50 inch will be too big, Im going to go for 40 or 42 inch I reckon
