Why, he and his company changed life as we know it.

Imagine if we were still walking around with Nokia 5110's.
Actually my dad would like that! lol

There's only a few ppl that would get coverage like this. Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg, Larry Page (google), Sergey Brin (google)

I agree. Being made out to be a saint. Wasn't long ago we were reading about the iPod factories in China. Let's face it, Apple products are one of the biggest marketing scams known.

Why is it a scam?

Having a marketing department that does it's job well isn't a scam. You either like their products or you don't I personally love the iPhone but couldn't give a rats arse about owning an iPad, iMacbook etc.

Amazes me how many people go out of their way to bash products they dislike.

I still have an iPhone 3 in great nick, gone the distance, dropped, left in the rain. Everything but gone down the toilet. Which is why I bought a new phone. Haha

Way overpriced for what you actually get, especially in the desktop and laptop range. Then there is itunes which is another story. I have an iPhone and even though I won't be getting another one, it has been good to me.

<set religious argument> = ON

Up until fairly recently (basically been in the Windows and Unix/Linux worlds all my life), the only Apple products I've used have been iPods and iPhones. But for the last 3 months I've exclusively used a MacBook Pro for work and home, and without doubt it's the best laptop by light years.

In comparison to other laptops, yes it is more expensive, but if you are a mid-high end user then it is definitely money well spent.

I'm not convinced about the iPad though, but then again I haven't tested any of the Android tablet yet.

<set religious argument> = OFF

Considering Steve Jobs co-founded Apple, was then ousted by the company 10 years later, built Pixar to a $7B company in his spare time when he wasn't at Apple, then came back to Apple when it was on life support, to turn it into the 2nd largest company (by market capitalisation) on the globe, whilst being riddled with cancer is no mean feat.

His greatest strength was his ability to tap into the market or create new markets where others had failed, sometimes using ideas that weren't new, but he did it in a way that would connect with his customers.

He did revolutionise technology and the testimony to that success is the way Apple's competitors have copied their products.

The man was a fair dinkum genius and deserves all the accolades he is now receiving, sadly after his passing.

I was going on a massive rant, and then stopped :D

Pre 2001, Jobs was good... post 2001 - brilliant.
NeXT was ok.
Woz was extremely lucky to have met Jobs, and Jobs extremely lucky to meet Jobs.
I still think their biggest downfall was not licensing their OS, like others did. That put them in such a small market share it almost killed the company.

Now they are the same - not licensing iOS - but this time they don't need to :)

Feck no. In my first job I spent a couple of years deciphering other people's Fortran code and porting it into a real language (not C, incidentally). Some of these people had been writing Fortran since the year dot, since the days when they had to enter their programs onto punch cards and book time on the (sic) computer to run the bloody things. They could think only in terms of Fortran, and would defend their ignorance of better languages with claims of 5% speed advantages. During a visit back to my old alma mater I told my former supervisor that I'd been working on Fortran, and he raised his eyebrows in surprise, commenting "Fortran - I thought we'd stamped that out years ago". The sad thing is that he was, and still is, patently wrong. Reams and reams of numerical software like LAPACK were first written in Fortran and to my knowledge remain written in Fortran to this day. Not even the Y2K bug could stomp out all the legacy Fortran in existence.

Still, it could be worse. Backus did lend his name to useful stuff like the Backus-Naur form of formal grammar. And even more importantly, he only invented Fortran, and not bloody COBOL...

Sad news about Dennis Ritchie. But i think it's hard to say Steve Jobs didn't do real innovations. Just look at the way technology is today and how much more it is for people's day to day lives. Just imagine where this is going to be in 10 years time, I just downloaded the men's health app on my iPhone no need to go and buy it now just download it to my phone. There is always people that will say someone is better then the other guy, but at the end of the day if that other guy only created 1 great thing I think they should be rewarded just like everyone else.
We're on this journey together, One Heart, One Club and they will Never Ever Tear Us Apart.

I did actually hear of Ritchie's death and it was sad - and knew who he was.
That spawned so many tangents in the world it wasn't funny!

I actually thought Google servers ran on BSD, not Linux, but I'm probably wrong.

(innovation doesn't need to be brand new, either)
