From memory, you select custom install after the initialisation of the setup files (so start Windows 7 setup from within XP), from there you can select another disk or partition to install to.

Don't forget to back up everything before you start!

Back up is no issue, thanks.

Will the same option be available from Vista? I have Vista but would prefer a clean install. I have the student download version.

Correct, you cannot upgrade an XP installation to Windows 7, but you can purchase an upgrade edition of Windows 7 and legally do a clean install.
Dedja, what about to an XP RAID array?
Are the RAID drivers integral to Windows 7 or do you have to download them and have them handy on a disk as for XP?

Yes, you can do the same with Vista.

The ItsNotCheating version is a full version, meaning you can run as boot setup disk without being in Vista or XP ... this is how I installed Windows 7 on my laptop and desktop.

Did you download the software from the site or order the disks?

If you are running software RAID in XP, then the drivers will be associated with your motherboard, so you will need to treat Windows 7 the same way as XP.

You can install Windows 7 within Vista or XP by running the setup EXE.

If you want to create a bootable Windows 7 setup disk, you need to follow the instructions here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... 1305767#r3

This is what I did.

Good luck!

Not sure I like the sound of this...does it mean ad's on your screen whether you're online or not and whether you want them or not?

Microsoft is to allow advertisers to reach out to Windows 7 users by utilising the Desktop of its latest operating system.

Microsoft is to allow advertisers to push their products to users of Windows 7.

A pilot scheme will run until 2010 and advertisers such as 20th Century Fox, Porsche and Pepsi have been lined up.

Advertising will appear in the Windows 7 interface itself as well as add-ons to the Internet Explorer browser, according to Microsoft.

There will also be themes relating to the advertisers, so you can download wallpapers designed by your favourite brands.

"The new Windows Theme Experience and Windows Personalisation Gallery in Windows 7 allow consumers to customise their technology to reflect the things in life they are most passionate about," a Microsoft spokesman said.

You can download the 'personalised' wallpapers from the Microsoft website.

I'd say no, you would have to download/install the personalised wallpapers, which in turn would have the ad's. So you can turn that crap off.

Thanks for that Dog_ger...good to know.

I'll stick with my Windows XP Media Ed for now though on the 'if it ain't broke...' principle but planning to get a netbook next year sometime so as long as it's not as bad as the Vista thing seemed to be I'll probably have to have Windows 7 eventually.

For most basic uses, a 3.12ghz on XP will outrun a quad core on W7.

In fact any chip is faster on XP than W7, e.g. A quad core on XP is faster than a Quad core on W7 according to more online benchmarking sites.

If you run a lot of apps that can take advantage of the multi-cores then the new PC will blitz the old one, even if W7 is slower than XP.

I have a desktop running XP, I have just bought a Laptop with Vista which I haven't used yet. Will the 3 user Windows 7 upgrade do both. The guy at the Good Guys said I need to buy a full version of Windows 7 for the XP desktop. But it sounds like I may not have to.

Yes, you can use the 3 user upgrade pack ...The Good Guys fella has NFI.

XP will require a clean WIndows 7 install, while Vista can either be upgraded or clean installed but you are licenced to do both with your 3 user upgrade pack.

Esssentially, you are licenced for 3 Windows 7 installs where you have existing Windows XP or Vista licences.
