I think it's ok to an extent. A couple of my cousins in Ireland have got back in touch through it which is great and it's a way of keeping up with what's happening to my other darling Red and Blue boys.

On the downside I do get a bit sick of some of the spammy stuff like the way some app's try to force/trick you into clicking on dodgy ad's.

Re: Facebook

Facebook amuses me.
I am on it. I use it. I put status updates sometimes.

What confuses me more; the people using it. Not so much Facebook as a site.

I don't understand how someone could add me as a "friend", yet be content passing me in the street hoping our eyes don't meet in an effort to avoid conversation.

I find a lot of people's friend lists are "a list of people I know or have known", not a list of people they actually care about and want to hear from.

"Yes, I worked with her 15 years ago... I'll add her".
"I think he used to work at the hairdresser where my great-aunt used to get her perm. On my list you go"

It's to the point where "friends list" shouldn't be called as such.

Sorry, I just have a love/hate relationship with technology. I love it. I work in the field. I design websites. I program. I use social networking. I read blogs. I write.

But I often wish I could "turn out the internet light". I wish I could get rid of mobile phones. I don't remember the last time I used my house phone to call another house phone, like I did in primary school to see if a friend wanted to come over.

Plans used to be set, not vague. "Ok, so we'll d the corner from there at the pet shop".

Now, plans are made without even making plans. "You in the city today?" "Yeah" "Ok, might catch up.. I'll let you know"

People can respond when they want to - that sucks sometimes. SMS. Email, even phone calls to mobile phones - people know how tried to contact them, and then choose (usually out of just plain laziness) if and when they reply.

Technology has made us lazy. At least I think so.

But I am still on Facebook.

Rant over.

And btw, Twitter is not Facebook with everything ripped out except the status update..

VERY wrong.
Whatever lecturer said that is retarded.

And has no concept of Web 2.0 at all.

Fully agree with your rant Diss, although I have never had a Facebook/Myspace etc..

I rarely bother texting people these days, if I need to know or want something I generally ring them - only have to press one or two buttons then ;)

Diss, you're very right about 'friends'.
I pretty much don't add friends any more, I'm pretty certain I've found all of my family/friends that are on there.
When I see someone else that I know on there I ask myself "would I have a beer with this person?". If I wouldn't I don't add them.
However, if someone thinks they want to be my friend - I'll add them.
It's interesting the number of people who do ask to be my 'friend', knowing what I do for a job and are then surprised that I contact them when I'm seeking information.
I figure, if they want to be my 'friend', they know what I do, then they shouldn't have a problem with me seeking info.

As for people "not making eye contact with you" it happens a bit, so I always force a brief conversation "G'day, how ya goin'".
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Quite coincidentally, the day after this thread was started my best friend from school,
(Living in different states etc, we now only talk about once every 18 months)
Invited me to facebook... I thought about it and thought... mmm Okay.

So I joined !!

So in just days after that...
Through a friend, of a friend...
I have found a friend that I've been searching for,
As we had lost contact due to tragic circumstances about 8 years ago.

I never thought of using Facebook to do this.

So now, I have to say Thankyou Facebook

O:)
