Three will roam to Telstra's network when outside of theirs.

Three's take on the merger with Vodafone ... http://www.three.com.au/merger

I think they stopped their sponsorship a year or 2 ago, and now concentrate their sponsorship efforts on motor racing.

I was in the 3 shop @ Arndale today getting the Mrs a new phone and asked them about the merger.

3 now use their own, Telstra's and Vodafones towers, Vodaphone are on 3's, their own and will soon be on Telsras as well

Both companys will continue with their own plans etc for about 12 months, they anticipate that the best of both carriers plans, caps, pre paid deals etc will be retained.

Within the next 12 months I will be able to ring Vodafone phones as part of my free 3 to 3 and visa versa.

I would have thought that they will keep both brand names in the marketplace ... interesting to see how it pans out.

My reading of the 3 web site suggested there were no immediate plans to allow this and that the two systems would coexist more or less as they are.
Logic dictates this will be revised later into a single system that more effectively rips off the subscriber, depending on the competition situation at the time...

I didn't say I was told that they would become one identity, I was told with in 12 months I will be able to ring my daughters Vodafone using my free 3 to 3 time.

IF they continue on as seperate identities but use the facilities available from both carriers (inc 3's use of Telstra network), keep their best own plans and allow access to free time between the carriers, how would that rip off the consumer??

Do you really believe they'll do that just because that is what their spin is saying now to keep the public happy?
Their best plans conflict with each other in various ways and to integrate they'll have to redesign them, and they'll do that in favour of best profitability when enough time has passed for people to forget.
I'm going through it now - Virgin bought my contractor about 9 months ago and made lovely promises about "no disadvantage" too.

my IF was bold and in capitals, it is a big if.

Until anything happens to the contrary I won't accuse them of anything underhanded

Optus for my mobile - since 1999.

Even when I was working at Telstra I had optus - and never had a problem. when I used to travel to the Grampians regularly - Optus GSM used to work better than the Telstra CDMA phone I got for nothing through work.

Given that, I used to sit the two next to each other in my car and there were spots (like between Lucindale and Kingston SE for example) where Telstra was it (if at all)

Sorry mate, I just thought that even with the "IF", you were being a bit optimistic.
I've become a bit cynical with time and repeated experience....

I started with Optus, then went to Vodaphone in Melbourne for a better deal, then to Orange for a CDMA service when I lived in the Dandenong ranges.
They tried to lure me to 3 with free phones but I lived in a 3 black hole so I stuck with the CDMA phone till they were about to close it down.
Then I moved to iSIM which runs on Optus. Now Virgin have bough iSIM and I need a new home...
My wife went Optus, then iSIM...
