Basically the legal story is they can only guarantee to play the Australian region DVD code if sold in Australia. If you get anything from overseas and it works the well done, otherwise bad luck. Sometimes it works, other times it won't. Some devices will even actually lock up completely if the region is changed X amount of times, then it stops working altogether. Old VDV playeres used to come with a code you could input to break this, but the newer ones are getting fussier and fussier as a general rule. I would strongly recomment looking into the specs of your DVD player to see whether it claims to play the region code you're after or not, although that information mightn't even be available. Essentially, nobody can give you any sort of guarantee. There's a very good chance it won't work, but conversely a chance it will. I think the best course of action is to just play by the rules and get the right region coded DVDs because they are guaranteed to work.
