Are they seriously any good, or just a novelty?

Am off on a Griswald family holiday thru Vic to Melbourne soon, shall i just stick with buying a Melways?

Or can i seriously do without buying a Melways and trust the Satnav

Is a cheap one just as good as an expensive one?

Are they easy to stick in where you want to go?

Go cheap, you can even get some adaptors that turn a phone into one for less than $100 these days.
Just be careful which personality you download to it, my mate tried Ossie Osborne and it kept giving him the wrong directions!

Depends what you're after though, if you want a big screen the price of the really good ones have come down heaps, if you just wanna a cheapy with a small screen (or using a phone for a screen) it will do equally as good a job but a bit harder to read.

Paid about $330 at Dick Smiths for a Navman, presumably last years maps but that doesn't matter.


Have been surprised how bloody easy and how good it is.

Smaller screen doesn't matter, because its 99% listening anyway.

I also used it in regional SA last week, the mapping wasn't as accurate for the country town (Mt Gambier) but still definitely good enough.

Well worth the $$.

If you are going to get one, make sure you get one that updates automatically. Saves being directed the wrong way down a one way street.

I've got a TOM TOM (dunno if they sell them over there, be suprised if they don't) and stuck Ken on it. Guy with an Aussie accent.

Lots of extras, hotels, garages, poinits of interest, a good road map with street names, eta, average speed etc, distance to next direction change, quickest route, shortest route etc, etc.

Costs over here about $350. Price has come down a lot over the last year. I paid $700 last Christmas.

Fouond it pretty good, and auto updates when street layouts change, but dependant on notification of course.

I had one in the car, built in, and it was sensational. we went from Adel, to melb, to Syd to Canberra all without opening a street directory. Which is good, cos my missus is terrible with a street directory and I'm hopeless being passenger to her driving!

The best part was being able to say we wanted to go to Canberra "via points". Those points were melb, syd (Balmain in particular) and the only time it missed a beat was when we were near an airport. There was some problem with GPS near airports (this was circa 2003) which is apparently fixed.

The major downfall I had with the idea is that the road network seems to be about 3 years ahead of what's on sat nav. The newer suburbs like Mawson Lakes weren't covered at all for instance.

Update...

Just did the Griswald thing, did a holiday with stops and seeing every single tourist spot with spots @ Mt Gambier, Warrnambool, Geelong, CBD Melbourne, Horsham and bavk via everywhere.


Did not take one map, Mrs Rushby who is a luddite and thought the thing was gonna be a waste of $$, suggested the GPS was possibly the most useful thing i've ever purchased as we successfully drove around Melbourne for a few days with no arguements, no "the map is upside down" and no "what is the name of this street?" events.
