Most of the spyware that seems to slow down a system will have a registry entry. If you look at the location of where files are found, the worst are in the registry. I would have expected this registry mechanic program picked up the same stuff an antispyware program would have gotten.

No. I'd previously run AVG Antispyware and Ad-Aware both with the latest updates and got the all clear from both.

This picked up lots of references to temporary files used during installations then removed by the installer automattically at the finish of the installation, and .png files from Snagit saved for emailing and subsequently manually deleted, and some OpenOffice files saved and subsequently moved to new folders. It appears that deleting or moving files in XP Pro doesn't always mean that OS will take out the registry links to the old locations.

Similarly, if you unistall a program then reinstall it to a new folder location, or uninstall an older version of something and the new version you install has a slightly different name for the folder it installs to, you finish up with registry references to both floating around and presumably a bit of hunting around goes on if they are programmes that load icons in the task bar as Open Office and Snagit do.

Cleaning those out appears to result in the task bar icons loading more quickly at boot, and related programmes opening more quickly in general.

If the problems don't come back then you have a general airflow problem in the case. You can either clear it up a bit, maybe add a fan and improve the airflow or leave the side off permanently if you're happy with things as they are.
