ADSL set up

Postby oldfella » Wed Dec 21, 2011 2:14 pm

I had a problem that I have now cured but thought it was worth posting as someone else may be caught.

Tried to get ADSL2 however not available with my service provider TPG via Brighton Exchange but they had an option to apply for "off-net ADSL2"? from Telstra -- tried but Telstra said not available from that exchange so got ADSL 8 meg which in theory is much quick that what I had previously. -- I am not interested at this time in changing service provider from TPG.

Was disappointing as download speed was slower than before and when I looked at the settings for my modem D-Link DSL-504T all looked fine - was working at half speed approximately. ---- Then after doing a full reset on my modem (5th time) I was looking at all the setting and observed that it was set for ADSL2 -- changed this to ADSL and retrained? the modem ---- problem fixed and now downloading 2-3 times quicker.

One for the old guy who is a computer idiot however a question for those who understand these things - is there any other setting I should be looking at within the D-Link DSL-504T basic set up (please use advice words suitable for a computer idiot so I understand). - Thanks

I had similar problems when I got an ADSL2+ plan with integrated VOIP plan from Internode.
I had download speed issues, and phone drop outs, and their help line kept making suggestions that didn't fix it.
So, I "escalated" the issue through complaints.

A review suggested that because I was 4.6 Km from the exchange the most speed I could get was about 6.4Mbps.
The Billion modem I have, they concluded, was constantly retrying for faster speeds and that was interrupting the service.
So we set the speed of my service to a maximum of 8mbps at their end and mine - no problem since.
