Exporting emails...

Postby A Mum » Sat Apr 09, 2011 12:50 pm

I have Windows 7 - I use Windows Live Mail.

I would like to export my emails out of windows live and put them in a folder on my computer.

This sounds sooooo simple.
I have followed the whole click on the export link in the email folder etc, etc, thing.

But it's not working :((

Is anyone able to please help me with how to just get these emails out and into a 'normal' folder.

I hope so :ympray:

Thank you O:)

Mum, you need to explicitly select the folders you want to export ... eg. inbox, sent items, etc, otherwise nothing is exported.

PM me if you're still having issues.

I'd recommend you switch to Thunderbird for email, and Firefox to browse, and use Mozbackup to back up both.

I wouldn't use thunderbird Psyber if she's using Windows Live mail ... works best with the free client or Outlook.

Live Mail utilising MAPI works extremely well, otherwise you have to use POP which is a dog to say the least.

I haven't caught up with what "Live mail" actually is, and I'd assumed it was a new iteration of Outlook Express.
I'll look it up.

Ahh.. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail?os=other
On a superficial read through it looks potentially open to abuse to me - either by hackers or by Microsoft.

At the moment I simply relay email received by my disposable ymail.com account to one of my internode ones.

Exporting emails...

It can be a tad confusing.

Windows Live is the latest name for Hotmail, so now you can have hotmail.com, live.com or live.com.au domain names for email addresses.

The latest cloud mail solution incorporates Microsoft's proprietary MAPI mail protocol which works natively with outlook, but doesnt work with other email clients. In those cases, you need to use the ancient POP protocol.

The free email client is called Windows Live Mail.

So the bottom line is that if you like outlook and use Hotmail/Live, then it's a great solution. Mail and Calendar sync across outlook and iPhone is great.

I used to use Internode email and have dabbled with Google but now use Live ... it's by far the best free cloud solution out there at the moment IMO.

Thanks for the explanation dedja.
I'm a bit concerned about the concept of "the cloud", and about who runs it and who can therefore access the data if they choose.
There has been debate in medical circles about the federal government's plans to keep the medical records of Australians either on Medicare's servers, or in a cloud format.
Not too many of us trust them, and GPs note they are to be set up to keep them updated without any suggestion of payment for the time involved.

Exporting emails...

Postby dedja » Tue May 10, 2011 12:09 pm

Well if you use Google, it's a cloud.

Even if you use Internode mail, then technically it's a cloud.

All a cloud is it's the latest buzz word for software as a service (SaaS), or externally hosted services ... nothing more, nothing less.

The only difference between Internode, Google or Microsoft us the range if services, and the fact that Internode host locally, whilst Google and Microsoft would host oversees.

That presents difficulties for some companies, and indeed Government, as Psyber had highlighted.

Yes, true dedja, that's why I prefer to use a local service I can sack easily if I don't like where they are going, and to keep my own data in my own service software on my own password protected computer. I don't trust "free" services like Google offers - there has to be something in it for them, like saleable data - I remember the street view data scandal.

I am a little paranoid I admit, and driven by a "Drive for Autonomy" in the 98th percentile according to some psychological profiling I had done in my student years.

It's not being paranoid ... its a valid concern.

The free providers who 'host' your data generally data mine or troll that data with the explicit intention of selling that information to others.

So if you're using Google for example and you buy something, that data is then passed on (at a cost) to companies who will then target you for further purchases.

It's actually a very smart business model but all privacy goes out the window.

Also, the online ads you see can be specifically targeted to match your online activities.

Scary world we live in now when you think about it, but it's been happening for a quite a while in reality. You used to (or maybe still do) get snail mail enticements from companies based on your previous purchases from retailers who have sold your data without your knowledge ... the only differnce now is that it is much more sophisticated.

For this reason I have no real issues for using these cloud services for me personal email and calendar, but would be extremely hesitant to utilise them at the moment for corporate needs.

<--- Totally confused and dumb... :ymsigh:

So I'm using windows mail - but my email address is a bigpond one.
I don't use any other thing (nor did I opt in) to anything else windows mail had to offer - ie msn etc, etc, etc....

Does that mean anything re my privacy etc??

You use the free Windows Live email client with a bigpond email address.

So Windows Live then for you is just an application you run with no online services from Microsoft ... no different to running Word or Excel, etc. So no privacy issues there.

Tel$tra on the other hand, may elect to utilise your data in the way I described above. I'm not explicitly aware of their current practice with regards to that issue but really they don't need to because they screw you enough in the way they charge for their services. :D
