I have a 42inch plasma with digital set top box and have only tried to tape something onto VHS once.
The sound wasn't as good but my picture and sync was all good.

Have I missed the question of this topic because I found it quite easy to connect.

I think the issue is that a VCR alone will not continue to record anything once there is no analogue signal as they only have analogue tuners.
However, set top boxes tune the digital channels, but can deliver analogue signal for the recording device.
There will possibly be some loss of quality due to the extra conversion, and because most cheap set top boxes have mediocre tuners anyway.
But that doesn't matter if you are in a good signal area.
