Recommendations for DVD recorder?

Postby Sploosh » Sun Oct 31, 2010 8:17 am

I'm thinking of getting a new DVD recorder. I just want something that records digital, new stations e.g. One, mate etc to the HDD on the recorder, as well as play DVDs.

Yesterday I had a look at a shop, and it seemed just about everything with a HDD was blu-ray and about $800 or more.

I thought they'd be cheaper by now, seeing as my old one from 3 1/2 years ago had a 160HDD - but can't record digital.

Any suggestions of good deals on at the moment? Also, does blu-ray play standard DVDs?

Sony & Panasonic would be the 2 that I'd recommend.

I bought my digital Sony recorder, 250gb, digital, not blu-ray for $899 2 years ago.
Yes blu-ray will still play normal dvd's

Or with all the right accessories a PS3 can do everything.

And don't buy LG I'd recommend.
My first DVD recorder was a LG, luckily I got an extended warranty on it.
It cost $799 and got over $2000 in repairs made to it and still didn't work.
LG do make nice monitors though!

I'm starting to buy stuff that has only one function - they tend to be more reliable and if something does crap itself you aren't up for expensive replacements/repairs.

Yes, the rubbish DVD recorder that I'm about to replace is LG - after a very short while it refused to ever play a DVD of any kind, and because it isn't digital (3 years ago I didn't know I should have looked for this feature) it can only record the 'ordinary' non-digital stations while making even them a very crappy viewing experience.

Not a DVD recorder but apparently these will fix DVD recorders so they can record digital stuff?

item 1 & item 2

I'm only going by hearsay as I got a DVD recorder only earlier this year and I upgraded to Mystar HD (the equivalent of Foxtel iq2) a few weeks ago and then realised I can't record anything onto DVD and don't really wanna get another DVD recorder yet and am thinking about buying one of those products but don't wanna fork out 100 bucks in case they don't do the trick. :?

Get a PS3 with Play TV......BluRay player, record to the Hard Drive, and plays games as well
