An argument could be made neither deserve to start anymore in what will likely be their international farewells. Goorjian has basically said Giddey is the man on the team now so he'll be starting and I expect Cooks will probably start especially now that he and Goorj are together at the Kings. My best guess:

Looks like we both have the distinction of players we selected for the starting 5 not making the cut of the roster! :x

At 1:30 am tonight/Tuesday morning the Boomers take on the USA in an Olympic warm up game and then the Boomers play Serbia at the same time on Wednesday morning both games in Abu Dhabi and live on ESPN & Kayo Freebies.

A very encouraging second half defensive performance from the Boomers in Abu Dhabi overnight saw them narrowly go down to the USA team.

USA 98 (Davis 17, Booker 16, Edwards 14, Adebayo 10, Embiid 10, James 10) def Australia 92 (Landale 20, Giddey 17, Daniels 14)

Next up the Boomers take on Serbia tonight/Wednesday morning at 1:30 am live on ESPN and Kayo Freebies.

Some big news yet to be confirmed former 36er Jack McVeigh is heading to the NBA signing with the Houston Rockets to a two-way deal in a blow for the defending champion Tasmania JackJumpers.

Also the NBL have released the schedule for the Blitz pre-season tournament which will see the 36ers play Tasmania on Monday September 9, the NZ Breakers on Wednesday September 11 and SE Melbourne on Friday September 13 on the Gold Coast.

An even better performance by the Boomers overnight beating Serbia with Patty Mills showing some old form.

Australia 84 (Mills 28, Exum 15, Giddey 13) def Serbia 73 (Petrusev 17, Jokic 14, Avramovic 12, Milutinov 12)

Also the Brisbane Bullets have announced the signing of their third import James Batemon to a 2 year deal as a replacement for the just released Shannon Scott. He's a 6'1" PG who played in Israel last season.

The NBL have also announced the Illawarra Hawks and Brisbane Bullets will be playing two pre-season games against the touring Shanghai Sharks from China on August 17 in Wollongong and August 23 in Brisbane.

The 36ers have announced the signing of their first import Kendric Davis to a one-year deal. He's a 5'11" PG who played in the G-League last season.

Also in a bit of a surprise the SE Melbourne Phoenix have announced that star forward and former 36er Mitch Creek has asked to be released from the final year of his contract to pursue opportunities overseas. He's currently playing in Canada during the off-season.

A good win for the Boomers overnight with one last warm up game to come against Olympic host nation France.

Australia 90 (Giddey 19, Mills 15, Landale 12, Ingles 11, Green 10) def Puerto Rico 75 (Romero-Fernandez 17, Ford 10)

Also in NBL news the 36ers have announced the hiring of senior assistant coach Marko Marinovic. He's previously been a head coach in the Serbian league and is currently an assistant coach on the Serbian national team at the Olympics. He also played for Serbia at the 2006 FIBA World Championships.

The Boomers have finished their Olympic preparations with a win over France overnight. Unfortunately Dante Exum got a badly dislocated finger and his future availability is in question.

The NZ Breakers have announced a couple of signings firstly forward Grant Anticevich has signed a one-year deal. He returns to the NBL having played with SE Melbourne Phoenix in the 2022-23 season and played in Germany last season.

The NZ Breakers have also signed Sean Bairstow to a 2 year deal. The younger brother of former 36er Cameron and Bullets signing Jarred he's a 6'7" forward who just finished playing his college ball at Virginia Commonwealth.

The NZ Breakers have announced the signing of their second import Freddie Gillespie to a one-year deal. He's a 6'10" PF who previously played with the Toronto Raptors and Orlando magic in the NBA and played in Germany and Serbia last season.

How good is Olympics Basketball! The intensity is next level and the defensive pressure mixed with the quality of talent makes it a seriously impressive sport to watch!

A few NBL signings have been announced the Cairns Taipans have signed their third import Pedro Bradshaw to a one-year deal. He's a 6'5" swingman who played in the G-League last season.

Also the SE Melbourne Phoenix have signed their third import Matthew Hurt to a one-year deal. He's a 6'9" PF who played in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies last season and also in the G-League.

Finally the 36ers have announced the signings of three Development Players for this upcoming season. Keanu Rasmussen returns from last season and played for Hawke's Bay in the NZNBL during the off-season, Fiston Ipassou gets a second stint as a DP with the Sixers and plays for Forestville in the state league and new DP Patrick D'Arcy who plays for Sturt in the state league.
