2014/15 NBL Season + Off-season news/Boomers

Re: 2014/15 NBL Season

A big win by Melbourne United last night in their debut at Margaret Court Arena over the Cairns Taipans 91-76 in a rare Wednesday night game. Jordan McRae had 21 and Mark Worthington 20pts & 10reb possibly showing signs of what they can play like if they all come together, it really was a dominant second half. After starting the season 6-0 the Taipans have now dropped their last 2 games.

Hopefully Melb Utd are satisfied now as the 36ers play them next here on Saturday night.

No surprise the Sydney Kings Josh Childress was named NBL player of the week for Round 5 for his 18pts & 13reb in the big win over the Hawks and then backing that up with one of the most dominant displays in recent NBL times with 36pts, 19reb, 7ast, 5blk in the Kings win over the 36ers.

Just embarrassing losing by almost 40 points in a 40 minute game.

The 36ers went down to the Wildcats in the GF rematch last night 84-74. Too much Jermaine Beal.

The big dunk Josh Childress did on Luke Schenscher in yesterday's game.

Unfortunately the 36ers tonight dropped the opening game of their north Queensland road trip losing to Townsville 96-84. They play the Taipans in Cairns tomorrow night.

Also in the monthly awards for November the Kings Josh Childress was named the player of the month and the NZ Breakers Dean Vickerman was named coach of the month.

I don't get why the 36ers suck so much at the moment. There is way too much talent, depth and experience to be anything but championship contenders.

I agree totally especially since signing Brock Motum. At the very least they should be a playoff team not 2nd to bottom and they're 0-7 with Motum too.

There has to be something else going on.

I must admit I don't watch all the games and if I do watch it tends not to be so much. I find Australian basketball a little frustrating sometimes. But when I have watched it seems amazing how often Wilson is on the bench during an important stage. Then suddenly he leads a fightback. I don't remember too many guards as good at getting into the paint and finishing with layups. I don't know whether it's a coincidence, he's lazy or inconsistent or whether perhaps Wright is trying to give all his guys good minutes. The last option you'd think not with an experienced coach and a struggling team that isn't playing primary school level. They also seem to run very few plays through Schenscher. He's 7-1 in a league notoriously lacking in genuinely skilled 7 foot centres.

I'm not a big fan of Jamar Wilson. In his past 3 seasons at Cairns not only did they not make the playoffs once (and now look like they will whilst the 36ers sink) but he played way too selfishly for mine. He also had a tendency to pad his stats late in games often driving looking to score 2's when his team would be down say 10-12 points with a minute to go. Cairns were even bringing him off the bench last season which says something. I don't know if Wilson can be blamed for this (although he does dominate the ball) but Gibson totally goes into his shell when he's on the court with him and instead of playing like a Boomer plays like a role player.

On Schenscher I used to be a big fan an defend him to the hilt but he's probably the most overpaid player in the league now. He's weaker than ever constantly being bodied out of position, he's almost a liability offensively, barely rebounds due to his lack of strength and speed and doesn't change too many shots defensively. He's constantly injured and barely an NBL starter quality big man anymore. It's a shame because like you said he's 7'1" (hardly plays like it) has NBA experience and just 4-5 years ago was one of the best centres in the NBL, he was also a fantastic passer out of the post too.
