Is anyone here a member of a club? I'm considering it, but I'm not really sure what I can expect for my $$

Are any clubs near Adelaide targetting younger members? I'm 27 and not interested in playing with grumpy old men

Or am I better off approaching the clubs directly?

I'm a member at West Lakes. Our fees are $1600 joining fee with around $1500 yearly fees. I think all clubs have their share of grumpy bastards but you soon learn who they are by trial and error of playing in their group.

I'm of a similar age to you but within 12 months joining up I had formed a group on a Sunday with me by far being the youngest. We get on well and organise everything via emails or advise each other that we are back from a long absence.

For what we pay I think we get good value for money.

Thanks Heater.

I'm curious whats actually involved in a membership though, Is it hard to book at certain times? Can you just show up without any notice by yourself and get on? Competition fees?

I'm trying to justify spending 1.5-3k on membership when I could play most courses in Adelaide without a membership...

I have a membership at The Vines which runs out end of September

it was $1000 for 18months as an introductory offer

I roll up without notice all the time, keeping in mind comp days etc.

when this runs out I too will be on the market for a golf membership

Well at West Lakes we have a booking system that is web based. Log on and you can book a tee time up to 1 week in advance. If you want to play Saturdays then this is peak period so you need to be organised and get on there a soon as the reserve bookings expire.

With West Lakes you also get 3 rounds a year at Blackwood, Mt Osmond, The Vines, Tea Tree Gully and Flagstaff each.

Weekly fees are $5 plus there are some novelties of which I never go in

didn't mind this course when I played it 2 years ago

and at that price is very good

the distance is a slight factor, but the highlight that softens that blow is the bakery on the way at yankalilla

Marion Park has club membership for $100 and then pay when you play, or a 12 month 7 day membership is about $700 I think. Its only a 9 hole course and is quite hilly but has some of the best views in Adelaide. The greens have all been rebuilt in the last 2 to 3 years and now has access to plenty of water through the quarry that sits behind it. Its come a long way in the 3 years since I joined. The new lease holder has done a good job with the course and made it fun to play again

Thanks guys, I will head out to Echunga this summer at $470. Get a feel for comp and get a handicap.

Next Autumn i'll bump this thread again and see what my options are for private courses closer to Adelaide.

I was looking at that option as well

I haven't played up at Echunga for a while but it is a nice course

im thinking stirling might be a good option as well at $850 for the 5 day membership

That 850 blows out pretty quickly to 1105 once you include fees. Blackwood is similarly priced but a far better course.

But it seems Blackwood are in a bit of trouble though, member numbers are rapidly dropping off and they have dropped their GM - http://www.blackwoodgolf.com.au/membership/newsletter

I'll be watching closely to see how they respond.

I got a 2 for 1 membership deal with my mate last year at Royal Thaxted. They had a deal where a current member could invite a non member and share the fees. U/30 membership was work $40 a month to me. Saying that though, I will not be renewing mine as it rockets up to over $1200 now I am over 30 and paying for myself, and I don't think the course it quite worth that.

They did just win a grant from Office of Sport and Rec to updgrade all of their cart paths.
