The Dunes Pt Hughes Review.
Firstly I lost the scorecard so dont have exact details. Anyway front 9 now in play, currently have a $35 all day as much as you can play deal, normally $50 for 18 holes which is a bit pricey IMO for a 9 hole course that you play twice.
Anyway course is links and similar feel to Lady Bay, McCracken & Mt Compass, although this one is closer to the seas than the others. The unique bit about the front 9 is 4 holes head north, one east (to turn back) and the other 4 head south. Bit like St Andrews. So when the wind is up you will play 4 holes in a row either into it or against it.
First thing that took my attention was the sand for repairing your divots is green!

As you tee up on the first hole about 30m in front of the tee is a stobie pole right in the middle of your tee shot, apparently it will be removed and you get to play your shot again if you hit it.
1st is a nice straight forward Par 5 about 480m which will be down wind if the SW is up off the sea. Nice big fairway and a real nice introduction to the round, could easily score well

2nd Hole is a real interesting hole, not unlike the 11th at Flagstaff Hill, short uphill Par 4 of about 260m that again will be downwind when the seas breeze is up, however it is a very well bunkered hole. There is a wide bail out area which could easily be hit with a short/medium iron leaving you with a wedge into the green, but the temptation of putting it on the green in one will be hard to resist for most. The green itself is a double green sharing it with the 5th however you cant see this from the fairway and there is a classic links pot bunker right in the middle of the 2 tiers which makes it quite unique.

3rd Hole is a slight dogleg left Par 4 of about 360m with again a wide driving area, then a 2nd shot into a big green with water to the left, but a fair way from the green.
4th is a short Par 4 of about 130m to a very slopey green and well bunkered including this cheeky little pot bunker at the front which will capture more balls from the slopes around it than the shots that do directly into it.

5th is a 370m Par 4 which will be tough going back into the sea breeze as its the highest part of the course and will be very exposed to the elements, tee shot is tighter than the other Par 4's and the green has a large drop off in front of it punishing any shots that are short. Will be a very tough hole.
6th is a straight Par 5 of 480m and was the last fairway to be laid so its still a bit scratchy. On the day I played it the wind was calm so made it to within 20m of the green in 2 shots both times I played it, one I converted into a birdie. The green is interesting, its a wide green with the highest tier in the middle and then drops off both sides, they will have fun pacing different pins on this holes. There is a long thin bunker in the front of the middle tier which again will capture plenty of balls. It will be a genuine 3 shotter par 5 when the wind is up.
7th is a weird par 3 of about 130m again, hitting across a quarry like ditch on the left and the green does not have any bunkers protecting it but has significant slopes including part of the green that slopes away from the tee shot which will make it tough.
8th is a long par 4 of nearly 400m and again will be into the sea breeze and will be the closest you get to the beach. A bit like the 5th the green is up on a dune and exposed to the elements, its a very large green which will be easier to hit than some but you will be playing a long iron in, it has large drop offs to the left (bunkers) and short and back.
9th is a pretty easy finish going back the same way as the opening 3 holes, nice wide driving area and a short iron in to a smaller green which is lower down in the dunes so will have a bit of protection. Io hope that wont be the 18th hole once finished as I love the finishing holes on a course to be a bit more spectacular and challenging.
Overall a nice course which is very open with no trees, typical of links courses its main defence will be the wind, but on a calm day like when I played there it will be a chance to go low. I scored 53 on the front 9 and 41 on the back so certainly appreciated knowing the holes the second time around. I actually look forward to playing it when the wind is up as Im sure it will be a completely different ball game.
The greens are perfect at the moment, hope they can keep them that way.
In summary the closest course I could compare it to would be The Dunes on the Mornington Peninsula or locally Links Lady Bay.
