AAMI - BEWARE

After forgetting to inform Aami about the sale of my car before moving overseas, and being charged an additional 2 months premiums, these jokers have refused to refund the excess payments.
They say the onus is on me to inform them of my car sale, which is fair enough. However, is it fair that they just keep 2 months worth of premiums due to an honest oversight.
I can't believe that a company can get away with this - effecively charging for something I did not receive.
F***ing disgrace. I won't be using these pricks again.
Rant over.

Going on old info here, but if you supply them with a letter from Transport SA outlining the date of car sale, they are obliged under the General Insurance Code of Conduct to cancel the policy effective for that date and provide you with any refund applicable.

Different to what I've experienced with another company.
Mrs DW sold her car and thought she'd cancelled her insurance. But apparently she had not.
Last month, eight months after the sale of her beloved Gold 1982 Pulsar, we received a cheque from the company giving us our money back. Mrs DW didn't even realise until she received the cheque that they'd still been taking money out.

I can officially inform you that if you can provide a green disposal notice, you will get your payments backdated. Happy hunting!

Done that already.
2 people specifically confirmed that AAMI will not refund overpaid insurance premiums as the onus is on the customer to notify them upon sale of the car.
I thought that was all I had to do too.

Contact the insurance ombudsman -
http://www.iosltd.com.auMake sure you have a read of AAMI's Product Disclosure Statement to check their cancellation procedure before you do though..otherwise they'll refer you back to AAMI. that would be available on the net as well.

Thanks FC. Was trying to find the ombudsman's contact details last night.
It's only a couple of hundred clams, but I'd rather have it than AAMI!

I managed to make AAMI back down by quoting their own web site and TV ads to them and offering to talk to the ACCC - over the "If you have had a rating 1 for 3 years we'll give you one for life." They tried to welsh but I got it and made them put the confirmation in writing.
They also claimed that in a situation where my car was hit and pushed into a post there were two impacts and therefore two excesses to pay, but when I mentioned the ACCC they went and checked with the boss and backed down - I don't know whether it is policy or just the girl on the phone was a twit, but they are not the only insurer to trot that one out.

Looks like I'll give them another call and use the ACCC threat tomorrow.
I've emailed the Insurance Ombudsman per FC above, so an ACCC threat may get them to back down.
If only I was mates with Alan Fells!!! He was the king!

What a croc... 2 impacts - 1 event, therefore 1 excess...

No offence FC but Insurance company's will try anything to pull the wool over punter's eyes.
When I was 18 I had an accident and the cnuts decided that it was an economic write off. they offered me about 3k below market value and expected me to take it. spoke to the old boy and he said no as it was in his name. when back to the bloke and said you either fix it or find me a better price. he found me a better price about $200 below so we took it and ran. we now changed companies to one that offers agreed values

Yes I suspect it is standard practice to try it on and, if even 10% of the customers fall for it, it is a nice little earner. They can always say it was a staff misunderstanding of policy if you fight back.

I personally wouldn't touch AAMI given the run around they expect you to do before they'll even give you a quote (it's easier getting tickets to the AFL Grand Final) compared to just about every other company who will sign you up over the phone.

Hmm.. I use them because it is a corporate deal and we get good rates and quotes were easily obtained by phone. Possibly the agency has leverage, because they deliver multiple clients. They are cooperative about repairs. You have the option to leave the car with them and they deliver it back fixed, or if like me you are less trusting you get your own quotes and push the one you want approved. I'm not so sure I'd deal with them on a solo basis. For me, RAA were the best deal in SA and Allianz in Victoria, otherwise. RACV are shocking.

HOLY CRAPOLA
Just spoke with AAMI AGAIN (Maybe this is a scam set up by Telstra as I've wasted a shoitload on phone calls!) and it seems they are now willing to send out a refund cheque.
It's obviously a case of who you speak to. Obviously just needed keep ringing back until I got the answer I wanted. Or it may have just been too hard for one or two of the bozo's working in their call centre.
Still the proof is in the pudding and I won't be holding my breath for that cheque. One feels this is not over by a long shot!

Of course they are....
RACV are underwritten by SGIC...

Interesting... I've found SGIC hopeless for car insurance, except for the few years I had an Alfa GTV, when for some odd reason they gave me a far better rate than anyone else????
I also kept my office insurance in Melbourne with SGIC because they were offering the best deal through an SA broker, but eventually the broker couldn't be bothered because they couldn't talk me into adding the huge public liability policy that made the real profit for the broker and SGIC wouldn't deal direct interstate, so that's with VERO now.

Odd they won't give you a refund cheque. Don't they have such a thing as a Returned Premium?
I too am with the RAA after too many aggravations from other companies (SGIC included). Put the house and contents there too. You always seem to get a friendly voice and the assistance you need in my experience with them.
