Euthanasia: for or against?

I read this today, and am wondering if it's true that 80% support euthanasia. Seems a very high percentage, but perhaps it is the case?

Taken from http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/stor ... 82,00.html

***Now with poll, for scientific analysis***

The Australian Democrats' South Australian leader says she'll push for a referendum on voluntary euthanasia in the wake of a poll showing most people in the state support the option.
Sandra Kanck says a Newspoll released last week showed 80 per cent of South Australians supported voluntary euthanasia.

''Support for voluntary euthanasia is the highest it has ever been,'' Ms Kanck said today.

''It's time for South Australians to be given the opportunity to express their view to the parliament, we need a referendum on voluntary euthanasia at the next general election.

''Until we have voluntary euthanasia legislation, hopelessly ill South Australians are in the terrible situation of having to take their own lives.

''(SA Premier) Mike Rann has flagged his intention to hold a referendum on reform of the upper house. When it's introduced, I intend to amend his legislation to include a voluntary euthanasia referendum at the same time.''

I'm all for people making their own decision if they are suffering.

I'm with you Trot, Sploosh add a poll to the thread.

I'm for, after watching my father, and then later, my partners uncle suffer and die slow deaths due to brain tumors, I would like to see people be able to make their own decision.

Why call it voluntary euthanasia? Surely if it were involuntary, it becomes murder?

I am for the concept, but don't believe a workable law can be created.

I'm For Euthanasia, but not sure where you can draw the line. i.e. can a severely depressed person choose to die in a dignified manner (Euthanasia) as opposed to suicide? What is the difference between Euthanasia and suicide?

I believe people who are terminally ill should be allowed to choose how they exit this world and should have the option to do it in a legal and safe way.

It is such a debatable and controversial topic with so many grey areas.

Each to their own. Personally I am looking forward to getting my bum wiped daily by some svelte young elderly care nurse 8)

You ever been to an aged care facility? Never seen one of those there. Plenty of these though...

Well, at this stage, 15 for and 3 against; looks like the 80% support figure is pretty accurate, on this board at least.

Support it under strict guidelines. It's already happening to some extent, it's lucky PMs aren't done on all really sick people who have died.
