Mobile Phones on planes

Surely it's just a myth that leaving them turned on will stuff up the plane's electrical system?
I haven't read much about it, but when I was on a Virgin Blue plane some weeks ago, they firmly made the point across that it was imperative that we do turn them off because they may interfere with the plane's technical side of things or some crap.
Surely if it was anything too major keeping them turned on, they'd actually make sure everyone locked them up in a special compartment on the plane - turned off - so we didn't have access to them mid-flight, in case someone decides it's their goal to crash the plane.
Just seems strange.

according to Pauly on fat pizza, they only tell you not to use them on planes, becouse when you are in the air, its free calls.

That is an interesting way of looking at it Silky Smooth. Makes sense that they would be confiscated if they were a real threat.
There'd be more chance of it bringing down a plane than blowing up a petrol station though. There'd be more chance of a petrol station being blown up if you farted while you were filling the fuel tank.

That reminds me...
Waitress: Sir, it is not safe for you to play with this on the plane.
Bart: You're the waitress. (Turns game off, and the plane nosedives)
Waitress: TURN IT BACK ON, TURN IT BACK ON!

There is a chance that the phone signal can interupt with other equptment, but the chance is small. i mean you would really have to be standing right next to the electrical equiptment for something to happen. But there is still a small chance and since there is a chance at all precautions must be taken.

I think mythbusters busted the mobile phone at servos setting off explosions, perhaps they should hire a plane and do this one too?

Oh yeah i forgot about that episode. You know they have to buy the plane because in the end they will just it anyway. Thats how it normally ends up.

But if it was overly threatening, surely they'd take all phones off people during the flight?

Haha... just something I found odd when I was on the flight - it was the first time I'd ever been on a plane. Just struck me as being really bizzare.
