or has anyone here lived or is living overseas and have any experiences to share? i know of at least 3 or 4 ppl on here living in china (risingblues being one) and england (maddogmike).

Good topic, I've been meaning to ask you a few questions about life in NYC.
Of course reading this topic at 2.14am after about 15 Paleys they all escape me, I'll come up with some tomorrow.

Would be interested to hear about Eight Mile Creek and any other pubs that may have an Australian theme. As you may have heard Jimmy, Lion Nathan are doing their darndest to try and buy out Coopers. Thankfully, it doesn't look like it is going to happen but it will be tempting for some of the shareholders (the top six apparently own 70% of the shares, so unless at least two of them sell it won't happen).
Ben Graham seems to be doing very well, even though the Jets on the whole aren't going that great.
Has the Van Nguyen saga made the papers in the US? Peanut lawyers of his have been trying to suggest that Singapore will be considered a third world country until they abolish the death penalty. Going on that logic, the US and 83 other countries must be third world as well!! Interesting as well to see that in today's Sunday Mail they had a story about the founder of the Crips who is about to be executed in California. Has that been in the news in New York.

I was there yesterday with the missus and her nan showing her around. ATM nothing is there, just a big fukn hole in the ground. THey were going to have planned a learning or remembrence type of 'centre' where ppl can come and see what happened thru pics and a memorial for hte dead but it was also going to include things that pissed off the deceased families like info on how the arabs came to want to do what happened on 9/11 painting them and the US in the same light as the terrorists. That got rejected by the mayor or the gov of NY so now there is talk of buidling a memorial with a bunch of smaller buildings but also a minority want to build the 2 towers back again the same as what they were which is what most everyday NYers want (backed by trump) and also what i would like to see. BUt there is so much red tape and buearacracy that nothing will be done for years...

ORD - EMC is a great pub, go there often altho havent been there since summer. go to http://www.eightmilecreek.com for more info. There are 2 others that i know of but havent been to yet with an oz theme, the sunburnt cow and the tuck shop. EMC is run by sturt fans with a bunch of Memorabilia on the walls. EMC sells COOPERS, thats all you need to know

Ben Graham is having a great year. THe jets are not however. He has punted well in all but one or two games but he is doing everything right to be a pro bowler in years to come, even shorter. THey love him here and i even bought his jersey . THe commentators always mention something about the cats or show aussie rules highlights when ever he comes up...its great.

VN, i read about that in the paper here, just a short snippet in the world section. so nothing much...all i can say is, idiots shouldnt have drugs on them in a ******* airport. death was handed out to some whacko or did in an 11 yo girl...he deserves it.

Most Americans have a view of Australia which is close to nothing but outback kangaroos and bogans, which isnt exactly the norm, im just wondering if the way New York is Portrayed in Australia is true, or if it is also very far from the mark.

Everyone is in a ******* rush. The native accent is ******* annoying and if you thought aust thinks its multicultural then you aint seen nothing yet altho no one over here cares about being multicultural, that is not a buzz word here. There is evey type of nationality here which is great if you like to eat diff cuisines each week. When im on the subway coming home from work, im one of a handful of caucasians, there are just so many foreigners here

Ppl arent rude to each other and the city, while being dirty rubbish wise, is clean in most other ways. Ppl arent bastards to each other as we all thought and guys here are really good blokes more so than back home as they dont have a chip on their shoulder and dont puff out their chests like aussie males do. Chicks are easy to talk to, altho i dont know anything about that unlike Oz where they think their shit dont stink!!!

Ofcourse, this is all general and there are exceptions to the rule. So Sam, some of our generalisations are true and some are off the mark. You would not believe some of the things americans think of Australia. I have had all the usual questions like do roos jump up and down the street and can you take them to school like you would a bus but the best one of all was if we spoke English in australia?

PS: New Yorkers forget that there is more to america than manhattan and a few surrounding areas. I know some ppl who have never been west of New Jersey...NY is its own world.

Mate of mine just got back from Noo Yawk - he was staying in Brooklyn - and said it was one of the friendliest places he's ever been.

Said it has a great bar/pub life.

Reckons you walk into a bar and within five minutes you're talking to everybody.

he is right tho, but i think thats the aussie in us, they love the accent, just today i had a lady at a school on the phone to me and she wanted to meet me coz of my accent...crikey...they wanted me to keep saying gday...lol

ORD, there are a few parts to Harlem, we train for footy in CP just on the bottom edge of Harlem, like spanish harlem and thats ok, but further up its a bit dogdy but other parts of it are fine...i rarely get up that way therefore dont walk alone thru it...we also train up in the bronx at a park called Van Cortlandt park. its scary up there and i wouldnt want to be there at night. Queens has a few dodgy areas where i have been at night with other ppl and its scary...brooklyn has some downright dangerous areas, there is always news of shots fired, robberies and deaths. its crazy, but those areas are quite far from me luckily...however, in NYC, 2 blocks to the left and the area is upscale and 2 blocks to the right and its ghetto with hoods and scariness...so it can change in a matter of a few hundred metres.

Some areas can be compared to elizabeth west, smithfield (all after dark) and also noarlunga and hackham (altho thats just more pov than dangerous).

Very true - they loved his accent.

He was doing a three month producing internship with 'This Is That' - a pretty big independent film company. They've produced stuff like 21 Grams, American Splendor and In the Bedroom as well as the films of Ang Lee, Todd Solondsz and Hal Hartley among a heap of others.

Reckons he got so many offers for sex from very forward - ballsy - Noo Yawk women.

Stupid bastard didn't take them up on the offer because of his girlfriend...who was across the other side of the world I might add!
