Anyone on here ever changed their job career?

I don’t mean just changing companies but changing the industry you’re in, or going back to study, or doing an apprenticeship or even starting their own business.

I guess people think about it but has anyone actually done it?

I’ve been in the same industry for 20 years now and am considering a change.
Spent 12 months looking and discussing different career options but haven’t made a decision on anything yet.

Anyone thought about it and what career would you look at if you could?

Something that I've been considering, I guess we all do from time to time.

I'm 43, just clocked over 10 years last week, I've got a good job, money is good, flexibility, travel, perks, but is it what I want to be doing when I'm 60? Many people within the company I work for are over 30 years service ( there's one bloke who has been with the company 55 years! ), so there's no shortage of security (in the foreseeable future) for me.

They say your earning capacity stops growing at around 48-50, for men, anyway, so it's sort of now or never for me.

For me the "logical" step would be to up skill, basically get an engineering degree to show that I actually know what I'm doing day to day, I could then become more of a consulting engineer which, as consulting suggests, brings (potentially) more money, less hours (if you choose) and be more of my own boss.

My job doesn’t stimulate me anymore and I need a change.
I’ve been at 2 different companies both for around 10 years each.
My pay is good to very good and it’s what is keeping me there.

People tell me you should love your job and make it your passion but neither of those have ever been ticked on my job list.

As I’m on good money that is not a motivator for me anymore.
Enjoying what I do next is my main priority.

Finding what that is, is bloody hard though.

Makes it a difficult decision if you've got good reward, good security..."why would I change?", you think.

Then you have those days where it's a chore, you think could I be doing something I love?

Absolutely, the "what would I do" is the biggest decision and if you're the "main" bread winner can the family unit afford the drop in income. So many factors.

Being your own boss is not all a bed of roses. I tried it after my second redundancy so I had the opportunity. All very well winning the work to start with, then performing it, but ensuring the feed of jobs was kept up was hard when working full time in the job you have won, to ensure it was done well. The stop start nature between jobs can be stressful.
You need to have a very good network and be constantly networking out of hours to ensure you can keep the stream of work and also that you do not overcommit yourself.

I'm in a similar boat, this is my second stint at my workplace (8.5 years and 11 this time), a couple of years in between doing courier work and then warehouse managing but I get a bit stale here in the same role.

My driving factors of sticking around is that I know the company like the back of my hand and I've settled down immensely over the past few years which is duly noted.

It does piss me off that some key stakeholders within the company have a "leopards don't change their spots" attitude which hinder my chances for promotion internally and most people tend to have to go interstate for a few years to develop and then come back into upper management roles.

I started in the factory here and unfortunately was a pretty crazy hot head at times which some people can't let go of, like Booney, I'm 43 now, life has made me grow up and I' more than ready for the big roles here, it's all about the timing.

I’m slowly realising life’s too short to be doing something you don’t really enjoy.

It’s certainly a risk as I have security and good income currently but need to find something that I really enjoy.

I’m not going to change for the sake of change like some people do, so I’m looking at it from all venues before making an informed decision.

So you are stalking potential new job sites by watching them from the outside first??

I’m a voyeur what can I say..............

Back in the late 1980s I quit medicine to become an Art and Craft Gallery director with my wife - it was her business. I lasted about 8 months before returning to medical practice in a new location. I'd never intended it to be permanent, I just needed a break and a fresh start in a slightly different area of medicine, and to bail her out of a situation that she was struggling with as her health deteriorated due to a Thyroid disorder.

I didn't have a 40th so the missus is organising a 40+GST party for me this year, complete with a 70's dress up theme.

Yep, I'm not a risk taker so that scares me somewhat, if I was single with no dependents perhaps, but not when others are relying on me for their welfare too.

I know, wouldn't that be sweet, I wonder if they were individuals or syndicates.
