Me too.
But the last few times I've caught the O-bahn, either the driver didn't want to change a fifty or the machine wasn't working or he couldn't get the 50c change out the money box or some other reason and they've all waved us through.

Had one say don't worry about it and as I was catching a tram straight after, so made sure I bought one then even though it was packed, but another seemed to take it as an affront that I would dare try giving him a note.
Perhaps it's an unfortunate sign of the times that it's an OHS&W issue for them to carry much cash.
