Intelligence reports in the US and UK are unequivocal as to the cause of the destruction of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over the eastern Ukraine yesterday (Thursday) afternoon local time killing all 295 people on board.
A heavy vehicle mounted surface to air missile system locked onto the Boeing 777-200ER, tracked it, and then launched the missile that brought it down in pieces close to the Russian border.
While it has not been confirmed that the missile was launched by pro-Russia separatists, those forces are dominant in the area where this atrocity occurred. Earlier this week a Ukranian cargo plane and a fighter jet were shot down in the area.

Edited addition: It is worth noting that the redacted expletive in the above quote was actually included in the text in the Yahoo story. Not sure if it was deliberately left in, or accidental.

I also heard a report that Putin had said that this would never have happened if the Ukraine had not of resisted Russian attempts to claim their land

Of course he would say that.
The international reaction will be interesting, given the response do far had been "naughty Russia" and then do nothing.
Things like shooting down airliners can significantly escalate things.

yes I hope that the International reaction is strong over this issue and help the Ukrainian people out
but the most likely result is that nothing will happen apart from a slap on the wrist
apparently the passengers were headed to Melbourne for a Aids 2014 Conference

This is truly a terrible event.
And I am very sorry to all the families involved.
Malaysian Air has lost 2 planes in 4 months.
One, there is no evidence of it ever crashing.
Something has changed at Malaysian Air.
I blame Malaysian Air.
This event will see the demise of the airline.
