Self Defence For Kids

Looking for some advice from any fellow SAFooty'er's that might have put their kids through some form of self-defence training/education.

I know absolutely nothing about this stuff these days, so can anyone out there recommend a particular type of martial art or self-defence?

Also, what is the earliest kids could start learning?

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,
JK

How old are your kids?

If you feel they're old enough, why don't you ask for their input too?

Most martial arts do emphasize self-defence as the cornerstone of the art, so it should be a good choice, no matter where you go.

*Note: I'm not a parent or a martial artist, so my opinion may be totally useless.

No such thing as a useless opinion mate. My eldest is 5, he says he's keen to do it but as soon as he cops a whack I reckon he'll be over it lol. Think it would be good for discipline and confidence as they grow older and as with most things (imho) the earlier they start learning technique and the routine of going, the better off I think they'll be. Just not sure if 5 is too young?

I briefly did Karate as a 6 year old, but mainly to improve my coordination. I know some place offer free trials, which would be good to see if your lad is in to it.

Not a parent, but BJJ would be my choice for a kid.

I started Master Pseudomite in karate with the NKA aka Miranda Kai at age 5. He loves doing it which is the main benefit to us. A self defence slant is put onto what is taught. I recommend it for kids. Can'T comment on the adult classes.

I should add: if you leave near either Campbelltown or Mawson Lakes then I could steer you towards a kids' aikido class. I don't know how focussed on self-defence the classes are, but I can vouch for the reputability of the dojos.

I learned some Judo skills as a kid about 9 or so.
I didn't stick at it long but no one ever tried to bully me again, after I'd demonstrated some of what I learned...

I like to be good at everything, and to try everything, but when I reach a satisfactory level in any venture I tend to start looking for the next adventure... ;)

Kick boxing.

You want to teach your future how to defend themselves.

A kick boxer will defeat anything.

You asked.

It is a discipline that is above.

Don't waste your money.

Teach them to run away from trouble and fight another day.

There will always be someone out there that will destroy you.

unfairly.
