If you are thinking of insuring your mobile phone or laptop, dont use the telcos insurance.

Get a quote from who ever does your household insurance, Optus wanted around $8 a month for my phone and similar for the wifes phone, and a spare phone which doesnt get used much, also included the lap top which moves around with me a lot. all up price of $77.00 for 12 months. Compare that with monthly charges by the telcos. its a no brainer

My household contents policy automatically covers anything I carry with me when out, up to a total of $1000.00.

check the fine print. Like Allianz insurance. They insured Brisbane homes for flood . But didn't pay out due to the water that flooded the homes here came from over flowing storm water drains, not the river. According to them

I always check the fine print - I'm the highly suspicious type and assume every business is out to rip me off. ;)
I'm prepared to fight for the right deal too.

My insurers just replaced my camera which was lost (or stolen) while I was in WA.
I lost my Canon SX10 IS - 20x optical zoom - and got it replaced with a Sony DSC HX300 - 50x optical zoom.
They did try to settle cheaper offering me first the Canon SX 50 HS as the "current equivalent model".
They backed down when I focussed on the maximum aperture issue as below.
I wrote: If you are serious about your claim of giving feature matching priority over price you must take aperture into account too.

From the dpreview website:
Canon SX10 IS Maximum aperture F2.8 - F5.7
Canon SX 50 HS Maximum aperture F3.4 - F6.5
Sony DSC-HX300 Maximum aperture F2.8 - F6.3

What sort of excess did you have to pay Psyber? We had some stuff stolen from our garage recently, including a restored toolbox that belonged to my grandpa. Firstly Allianz wanted receipts for all the tools (yeah, right) but the excess made the exercise pointless anyway. We're looking at reviewing our house insurance

$100 XS on contents home or away.
The new camera was RRP $599, plus the UV filter, 8GB SD card, camera case, and second camera battery, to match what I'd lost.
They didn't ask me to prove ownership of any of the minor items, just the lost camera itself.

My XS on the building is $200, but you can choose any XS you like and they adjust the premium to fit.
So, you work out your own compromise...

I'm with APIA, which is for "over 55 year olds not working full time", but the RAA quotes for cars, and house and contents, are very similar when I cross check at renewal time. I was with Allianz at first when I went to Melbourne before qualifying for the APIA deal, and they were dearer than what I'd been paying the RAA before I left SA.

Thanks for that. My folks are recommending we switch from Allianz to RAA. Not quite ready for APIA yet ;)
