Banks

Why do they open at 9:30, and shut at 4pm?
Can anyone offer a logical explanation?

Don't know why they open at 9.30, but I think they close at 4 due to all the behind-the-scenes balancing etc they have to do. Did work experience at one years ago, and a lot seemed to go after closing, especially if there were discrepancies.
Though I don't know why they then stay open till 5 on Fridays - presumably as a service so businesses don't carry cash over the weekend and perhaps this was introduced when banks stopped opening Saturday mornings?

My Credit Union's website is open 24 hours a day.
Even their branch in the CBD is open 9-5. (10am on Wednesday)
Suburban branches are the same but open on Saturday mornings too.
Even Banksa is open till 5pm.

Who do you bank with Punky, the Bank of Adelaide, Hindmarsh Building Society or something? :?

i would also assume the rate of internet banking going up would mean that banks can save money on wages and whatnot by not being open as long as 'the good old days'.

Having a parent who worked in a bank back pre-internet days - my recollection is that they have always (well at least back to when I was a little kid 35 years ago) shut their doors earlier than most other businesses.

From what I can tell, its more to do with balancing the books each night.

ok, but times have changed- wages are directly deposited, people use ATM's, nternet Banking, so not much (by comparison to 25 years ago) actually happens in the bank these days.
In those times, you had a bank book where entries were made and stamped, I can understand the need to balance after closing, but now everything is electronic, banks are far less busy, so why haven't they moved with the times?

Wedgie, I'm with the Commonwealth Bank (based in Hindmarsh ;) ), but only have to use their services to deposit cheques.

Would imagine the staff to customer ratio wouldn't have changed a great deal, which might possibly explain the times remaining as they have for quite some time?

I'd say most bank tellers now would be ex-check out chicks- they are virtually cashiers.

There is still a lot of cash handling going on, and reconciliation of deposits containing mixtures of cash and cheques.
And entry errors still occur even with electronic processing so all that gets checked.

I, too, usually only go in to deposit, but not everyone uses Internet Banking, and not all income is directly deposited.
I've been carrying a cheque for $45.56 around in my wallet for over a week - I must call in at the bank later today...

(I bank with ANZ, Bank SA, and HSBC.)

My grandmother refuses to have an ATM card - she still has passbooks for her accounts.

The BankSA branch I use is only open from 12-4pm. My guess is because its in an industrial area. But Id assume a lot of business's would like to do their business banking there.

None. ( I wish!)
But I do have my ANZ manager's direct phone no. and direct email address, in return for them having most of my business... ;)
When I bought my investment property recently he, very helpfully, offered to take the ANZ's cheque across KW St to the conveyancer's bank to save me the trip to the CBD, as I was packing to fly to WA.

Anyone here a customer of Adelaide Bank and recently been told their accounts will change to Bendigo in April?

Not me personally but my grandmother got the whole pack a couple of days ago telling going through the changes to Bendigo in detail...

Bendigos terrible if you want quick transfers. My missus has a Bendigo account and it takes at least 2 days to clear into my BankSA one.
