Apparently they are cheap but they only sell nasty brands that no one has ever heard off. Hopefully it will make Coles and Woolworths more accountable though. Foodland might find it tough to survive unfortunately.

ALthough they're unknown brands - some of their stuff is actually quite nice.

I always buy a pile of one of their brekky cereals when I'm in Horsham....

I went into one in Melbourne, on the Burwood Highway near Ferntree Gully, few times but never saw anything I was prepared to buy despite my cheapskate inclinations.

I wandered into an Aldi in Melbourne once, looking to get some basic supplies for brekky & tea/coffee.

Spent the next half hour wandering around, feeling like I'd wandered onto the set of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. They had everything I needed... Corn Flakes, Coffee, Bread, etc, but the Corn Flakes were not Corn Flakes as I knew them. The coffee was unlike any brand of coffee I had ever seen. The bread looked vaguely like a generic brand, yet was completely alien to me. It was like I had wandered into a parallel universe, where supermarkets are filled like Cheap As Chips stores, and the brand names are not the same as those in our universe. A truly surreal experience.

I doubt it will have any great affect on Foodland, people shop at Foodland largely because they want to buy labelled products not the Generic "You'll love Coles brand". Foodland have over double the range of Coles / Woolworths as it is, ALDI were reported to keep around 800 lines of Generic product.

The point of ALDI is that you buy in bulk and get the discount rate. People that save the most at ALDI are those that have the cash up front to stock up on bulk items rathan just shop there week to week.

they are throughout SE QLD. I havebeen in to two of them and they were very un organised, just boxes piled in areas, no shelves, very cheap brands, super sweet things (biscuits as an example). A mars bar is called a mix bar as an example and half the price of a normal one.
no name brands everywhere

But on the flip side they are half the cost of coles and woolworths. Fruit and veg can be poor at times. and no, nothing has changed in regards to keeping "coles and woolies honest". Its still the same with coles/wool/aldi competing here in SE QLD. Still rip offs for most things

ANd also you pack your own bags there, the checkout operators just scan your items, and throw them in a heap for you to pack.

or ???? Jacks i think it was in Brissie late 70's/early 80's, u grabbed ur shopping trolley and a texta and as u put an item in the trolley u wrote the price on the item, the place was generally an organised mess. Not sure wot happen to this particular company, dont remember them lasting too long.

Suppliers producing groceries ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to household products have spoken out against Australia's two dominant supermarket chains, Woolworths and Coles, saying they prefer dealing with German-owned rival Aldi.

Jack the Slasher. I remember it from Southport (near Surfers) in the 70's. First you had to find a working texta, then write the price on each item and hope it didn't rub off (fun for frozen stuff) and find boxes that weren't falling apart in a pile at the checkouts to pack everything yourself.

I wonder why he didn't last.

The much more exciting part of this story is the possibility of getting Costco which will revolutionise how people shop and rip into Woolies' and Coles' dominance.
