Gun Laws in USA.

Postby Dog_ger » Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:54 pm

Senseless.

If we had the same laws here, I would be hesitant to walk the streets.

We have the right to bear arms. Why?

Copy & pasted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_law_in ... ted_States

In the United States of America, the protection against infringement of the right to keep and bear arms is addressed in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. While there have been vigorous debates on the nature of this right, there has been a lack of clear federal court rulings defining this right until recently. The individual right to bear arms for self-defense was affirmed in the landmark United States Supreme Court cases District of Columbia v. Heller in 2008, which overturned a handgun ban in the Federal District of Columbia, and McDonald v. City of Chicago in 2010, which incorporated the individual right to the states.

From the same website.

In 1791, the U.S. adopted the Second Amendment which reads: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." And in 1792 the Congress enacted the Militia Acts of 1792, which conscripted every "free able-bodied white male citizen" into the militia and required such citizens to procure "a good musket or firelock, a sufficient bayonet and belt, two spare flints, and a knapsack, a pouch with a box therein to contain not less than twenty-four cartridges, suited to the bore of his musket or firelock, each cartridge to contain a proper quantity of powder and ball;..." (U.S. Statutes at Large, Vol. 1, 1st Session, Ch. 33)

Don't you think the "Well Regulated Malitia" should be the {Police}. :?:

Senseless.
Take guns out of society and the number of deaths by firearms drops. But they hold this idea as inferior to the need to feel strong. I don't see it just as their domestic problem either, with all this apparent "need" for guns in the U.S the world's most prosperous country becomes a goldmine for firearms dealers to less stable countries.

it is built into their culture and they are used to having them. You will never get the gun control because anyone can buy a gun over there.

Surely there has to be a compromise in the laws. The pro fun groups are incredibly powerful so removing the right to bare arms will never happen, but surely something like strict limitations on the type of firearm, to something that can't mow down many people quickly.

Thats way to much common sense.
The trouble is even is guns are outlawed if someone wants one badly enough they will still be able to get one
Look at the gun laws in Australia, we have fairly strict laws but I could go down the street and get a semi auto rifle in 15 minutes.

True, but if you aren't surrounded by guns and they aren't considered a normal part of life, you are less likely to even consider even going on a rampage.

American and there guns. Here are a few stats for you.

Since 1982 the USA have had 61 mass shootings.

Since Columbine, 11ish years ago, there have been 31 school mass shootings.

Australia in the years of 1983 to 1996 (I think, pardon me about the dates here) had 13 mass shootings. Since John Howards gun laws were brought in the number of mass shootings has been 0. That doesnt mean there arent nut jobs out there doing abd stuff with guns, just not on the mass scale.

After the Virgina Tech shootings, one solution that came up was that there werent enough guns. Apparently there were 15000 un armed students and if they were armed then they would have taken the guys down. Nothing like bit of a shoot out at uni. Beats those borning lectures!

A solution which has been braught forward was that Principals and teachers should be carrying guns.

So after all of that, there will be no change. The NRA are too powerful and have way too many politicians support for anything to change.

True, but when someone goes off the rails, not having one, or several, handy may slow them down on acting on their angry impulses.

I must admit I'm still not happy about having to sell my Winchester lever action 22 Magnum with the Nitrogen filled scope when I no longer had a farm to justify the licence, and hand in the hollow nose copper jacketed bullets that went with it.
(I wasn't mucking around with those foxes hunting the new born Angora kids at the time.)

Really? I don't know where to obtain guns in Australia.
If I lost my head the most society would have to fear from me would be a carving knife. But if I lived in the U.S I'd say the chances are I'd know of people with guns, where they keep them etc.
